Canada Falls 7–2 to USA in World Junior Summer Showcase Finale as Prospects Eye 2027 World Juniors
The 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase concluded Saturday in Windsor, Ontario, with Canada falling 7–2 to the United States in the final game of the 10-game event. Nashville Predators prospect Jack Ivankovic impressed as Canada’s backup goaltender, while St. Louis Blues prospect Tynan Lawrence, 17, demonstrated versatility at both center and wing. New York Islanders 2026 first-round pick Malte Gustafsson, signed to a three-year entry-level contract in July, continued building strength for Sweden, and LA Kings fifth-round pick Vertti Svensk stood out with his skating for Finland. The showcase will help determine rosters for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer, December 26–January 5.

NHL Network to Reveal Top 20 Wings for 2026–27 Sunday; Kucherov Favored to Stay No. 1
NHL Network is set to reveal its Top 20 Wings list for 2026–27 on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET, with Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov favored to retain the top spot after winning the Hart Trophy in 2025–26 with 130 points (44 goals, 86 assists). Boston’s David Pastrnak ranked second last year with 100 points. Minnesota Wild forward Matt Boldy—who set career highs with 42 goals and 85 points and stood out for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics—is the pick to make the biggest climb. Canadiens wingers Cole Caufield (51 goals, 88 points) and Juraj Slafkovsky (30 goals, 73 points) are expected new entries to the list.

Capitals Prospect Oliver Suvanto Wants to Be ‘Big and Mean’ in Washington’s Mold
Washington Capitals development camp gave Oliver Suvanto his first glimpse of NHL life, and the 17-year-old Finnish forward plans to embrace it. Selected No. 18 overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, the 6-foot-3, 207-pound center from Turku posted 11 points in 48 Liiga games last season playing against professional men—the most by any player 17 or younger in Finland’s top league. NHL Director of European Scouting Jukka-Pekka Vuorinen called him the most complete and mature 17-year-old center seen in Liiga since Aleksander Barkov. Capitals assistant GM Ross Mahoney sees Suvanto as a future second-line center. He returns to Tappara for one more Finnish season.

Blackhawks Prospect Mason West Is ‘All Hockey Now’ After Winning Minnesota Football Title at Edina
Mason West, the Chicago Blackhawks’ No. 29 pick from the 2025 NHL Draft, arrived at the World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor fully committed to hockey after completing a dual career at Edina High School in Minnesota. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound forward won the Minnesota Class AAAAAA football state title as quarterback last November before switching to hockey full-time. West, who turns 19 on Monday, posted 25 points in 38 USHL games with Fargo last season and will play for Michigan State this fall alongside five first-round picks from the 2026 NHL Draft. He is representing the United States at the showcase.

Three Veteran Free Agents—Perron, Saad, Drouin—Could Bolster Minnesota Wild on PTOs
The Hockey News identified three veteran free agents Minnesota should pursue on professional tryout offers for 2026–27. David Perron, 38, offers 1,200-plus career games and 13 goals in 65 games last season, plus a Stanley Cup ring earned with the St. Louis Blues. CM Punk Honors Minnesota North Stars at WWE SummerSlam With Custom Vintage-Inspired Gear
WWE superstar CM Punk paid tribute to the Minnesota North Stars at Saturday’s SummerSlam in Minneapolis, wearing a custom green-and-yellow jacket, matching trunks, and boots styled after the vintage franchise colors. Punk replaced the North Stars’ iconic arrow ‘N’ logo with his initials ‘CM’ and wore the number 20 on the back to mark his two decades in professional wrestling. He defeated Cody Rhodes to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship. The North Stars played in Minnesota from 1967 to 1993 before relocating to Dallas, where the franchise is now known as the Stars.

Ex-NHLer Al Montoya Coaches Cuban American Team at 2026 Amerigol LATAM Cup in Florida
Al Montoya, the NHL’s first Cuban American player and current VP of Cultural Growth and Strategy for the Dallas Stars, spent Saturday coaching a U12 Cuban American team at the 2026 Amerigol LATAM Cup in Coral Springs, Florida. The tournament, hosted at Panthers IceDen and running August 1–9, features more than 1,500 players representing 16 countries and territories. Montoya’s team fell 4–3 to a Caribbean select squad, though his son Henry scored a goal and his mother, Dr. Irene Silva, was in attendance. Montoya played 168 games across seven NHL teams between 2009 and 2018. The LATAM Cup aims to grow the sport in Latin American and Caribbean communities.
