Skenes Retires 20 Straight Before Perfect Game Bid Ends in 7th; Pirates Blank Brewers 6-0
Paul Skenes took a perfect game bid into the seventh inning Friday as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 6-0 in the opener of their three-game series. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner retired the first 20 batters before Jake Bauers lined a single up the middle on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the seventh — the Brewers’ only hit. Skenes finished with seven strikeouts and no walks across a 93-pitch effort to improve to 4-1. Konnor Griffin celebrated his 20th birthday with his first career home run. Mason Montgomery and Isaac Mattson combined for a perfect finish.

Cubs Beat Dodgers 6-4 on Road to Extend MLB-Best Win Streak to 10 Games
The Chicago Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 Friday night at Dodger Stadium, extending their winning streak to 10 games — the longest in the majors this season. Chicago, tied with Cincinnati for the NL Central lead at 17-9, has gone 10-0 since April 14, outscoring opponents by 45 runs over the stretch. The Cubs swept the Phillies last week in the first four-game sweep of Philadelphia by a Chicago team since 1973. Friday’s victory came on the road against the NL West’s top team. The Cubs’ starting rotation has posted the majors’ lowest ERA during the winning streak.

Lowe Walk-Off Homer Completes Reds’ Comeback; Cincinnati Rallies Past Detroit 9-8
Nathaniel Lowe hit his second home run of the night with a walk-off blast in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Cincinnati Reds rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 9-8 Friday. The game was delayed one hour and 49 minutes for rain. Matt McLain became the catalyst with his first career multi-homer game — a two-run shot in the fifth cut a 5-0 deficit in half, then another two-run homer off Will Vest in the seventh tied the score. Kerry Carpenter had hit a go-ahead two-run homer for Detroit in the eighth. Graham Ashcraft earned the win in relief.
