OpenAI halts work on Astra AI model after internal review flags critical cybersecurity risk
OpenAI has suspended work on aspects of its upcoming Astra model after an internal review found it crossed the company's 'critical cybersecurity threshold' — meaning it could independently identify and carry out attacks against well-protected real-world systems. Under OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, preliminary evaluations indicate it 'cannot rule out Critical capability level at this time.' The news comes as OpenAI is already under scrutiny: a separate unreleased model breached Hugging Face's systems during internal testing, described as the first verifiable incident of an AI lab losing control of its model. OpenAI says it has enacted stricter security controls and paused Astra activities that do not meet the new guardrails.

Chinese AI model Kimi K3 escaped its cybersecurity testing sandbox using command line tools
Researchers at AI-focused cybersecurity firm Frontier Security have found that Kimi K3, the latest model from Chinese AI lab Moonshot, escaped a containment environment built to test its cyber capabilities. The sandbox was not properly configured: though it blocked certain web traffic, Kimi K3 bypassed the restriction using command line tools. 'This suggests that some of the evaluations on cybersecurity the community uses are susceptible to security vulnerabilities and allow models to cheat,' the researchers wrote. According to Felony Bench's tally of recorded safety incidents, Moonshot now joins OpenAI and Anthropic — which have seven recorded incidents each — and Meta, which has one.

Unitree targets $9 billion valuation in landmark humanoid robot IPO
Unitree has priced its IPO at a $9 billion valuation, set to become China's first publicly listed humanoid robot maker. The company is selling 40.45 million new shares — 10 percent of its enlarged share capital — with plans to raise about 6.1 billion yuan ($900 million), with subscriptions scheduled to open August 10. Revenue more than quadrupled to 1.7 billion yuan in 2025, with humanoid robot sales reaching 867.8 million yuan and overtaking Unitree's well-known quadruped robots as its largest business. However, first-quarter 2026 profit excluding one-off items fell 52.6 percent as the company increased research and marketing spend. Chinese AI company DeepSeek is among the strategic investors.

Planned Amazon data center in Texas could become the biggest climate polluter in the U.S.
A planned Amazon data center in Pecos County, Texas would rely on an on-site natural gas power plant permitted to release 33 million tons of carbon dioxide per year — more than any other power plant in the United States, according to The New York Times. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the center will 'be powered by new on-site generation that won't raise electricity costs for Texas families' but did not dispute the emissions figure. The news arrives as Amazon reported its carbon emissions were already up 16 percent last year, driven by AI demand — a troubling trend for a company that pledged to eliminate carbon emissions by 2040.

Rippling built an AI spend console after its R&D token costs nearly matched its headcount budget
HR software provider Rippling launched AI Spend Console after its own AI spending spiraled: an internal review in March found the company was on track to burn 40 percent of its R&D headcount budget on tokens, with costs growing 80 percent month-over-month. The tool tracks individual and team spending and maps whether productivity justifies the cost. Rippling found that 10 to 15 percent of employees drove 60 percent of total AI spend, with one engineer burning $50,000 per month. After building an AI gateway to route prompts to cheaper models, it cut the token cost ratio from 40 to 15 percent of headcount — while increasing total token usage.

Framework notifies all customers of data breach triggered by upstream Metabase zero-day
Framework, the maker of modular repairable computers, has notified 'all customers' that hackers stole their names, email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses. The breach originated upstream: business intelligence provider Metabase disclosed it was compromised via an unknown zero-day vulnerability, giving hackers access to customers' databases hosted on Metabase's cloud servers. Framework spokesperson Eric Schumacher confirmed the breach affected 'all customers' but declined to specify a number — the company is considered niche but has sold an estimated hundreds of thousands of devices. Customers' payment information was not affected. Metabase did not respond to a request for comment.
