IndyCar Closes Regular-Season Fields to Charter Teams Only Starting in 2027

Beginning with the 2027 season, IndyCar will limit all race entries outside the Indianapolis 500 to chartered teams only. The series announced Saturday that it will no longer permit open entries at regular-season rounds, a policy that directly affects any privateer teams looking to run select events. IndyCar currently holds 25 active charters, all of which will be required for participation in the 2027 campaign before the field grows to 27 in 2028 when Honda and Chevrolet receive manufacturer-backed entries as part of their multi-year engine supply renewals. The Indianapolis 500 remains exempt, preserving the tradition of a 33-car starting grid.

IndyCar Officiating Board Reviews Long Beach Push-to-Pass Failure, Takes No Action

IndyCar’s newly independent officiating board received its first major test following Sunday’s Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach after a push-to-pass software failure was detected during a Lap 61 restart. The malfunction prompted a post-race review by INDYCAR Officiating, which ultimately determined that no corrective action would be taken regarding race positions or penalties. The push-to-pass system, which grants drivers a temporary power boost for overtaking, was rendered inoperable at the moment of the restart. The case marked the officiating structure’s first significant technical investigation since the independent board was introduced ahead of the 2026 season.

Acura Expands IndyCar Presence Across Multiple Rounds Including Indianapolis 500

Acura is increasing its involvement in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES in 2026, adding brand presence to Meyer Shank Racing entries at multiple rounds including the Indianapolis 500. The Acura nameplate, a Honda luxury division, appeared on Felix Rosenqvist’s No. 60 MSR car at Long Beach where Rosenqvist started from pole position.
