Fidelity and Vanguard Block SPLC from Donor-Advised Fund Grants Following Indictment
Following the April 21 federal indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center on wire fraud and money laundering charges, Fidelity Charitable and Vanguard Charitable moved Wednesday to block donor-advised fund grants to the organization. Fidelity Charitable notified clients the SPLC is “not an eligible grant recipient during the ongoing investigation,” citing its grant-making standards. The SPLC, which reported $129 million in annual revenue and more than $800 million in assets, called the indictment politically motivated. The actions mark the first time major DAF platforms have suspended access to a prominent national nonprofit due to a criminal indictment, raising sector questions about accountability frameworks and DAF platform governance.

The organization was indicted April 21 on 11 counts including wire fraud, stemming from allegations it secretly funneled more than $3 million to extremist informants while publicly claiming to dismantle those groups.
