Hospitals’ Charity Care Falls Short as Uninsured Ranks Grow Nationally

A joint investigation by KFF Health News and the Minnesota Star Tribune found that Minnesota’s nonprofit hospitals rank among the least charitable in the nation, spending less on financial assistance for low-income patients than nearly every other state. Of Minnesota’s 123 general hospitals, 62 devoted less than 0.5 percent of their operating budgets to charity care between 2020 and 2024, well below the national average of 2.4 percent. CentraCare’s flagship St. Cloud Hospital spent the equivalent of $25 in patient aid for every $10,000 in operating costs. The findings arrive as the national uninsured rate climbs due to ongoing Medicaid cuts.

Sector Survey Finds Continued Crises Depleting Nonprofit Finances and Morale

An analysis from The NonProfit Times published Monday finds that ongoing crises are compounding financial and emotional strain across the nonprofit sector. More than one-third of organizations ended their most recent fiscal year with an operating deficit, and more than half hold fewer than three months of cash on hand, according to the Nonprofit Finance Fund’s 2025 State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey. Federal funding disruptions, rising service demand, staff burnout among 95 percent of leaders polled, and intensifying political scrutiny are all taking a toll. Observers say the pressure now reaches well-established organizations, not only underfunded grassroots groups.

Major DAF Platforms Face Backlash for Blocking Donor Grants to SPLC

Three of the nation’s largest donor-advised fund platforms—Fidelity Charitable, DAFGiving360, and Vanguard Charitable—are refusing to honor donor instructions to direct grants to the Southern Poverty Law Center following a contested federal fraud indictment of the civil rights organization. The three platforms collectively hold nearly $130 billion in assets. The Democracy Alliance, representing more than 75 major donors, networks, and foundations, wrote to the platforms calling for a reversal. Critics say the decision sets a troubling precedent: allowing DAF sponsors to block grants based solely on unproven government charges, undermining donor authority and philanthropic independence.
