NCAA Denies Sorsby Reinstatement; Texas Tech to Appeal, Court Hearing Set for June 1
The NCAA denied Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s reinstatement request Tuesday, ruling him permanently ineligible after he bet on Indiana football games while a Hoosiers player in 2022. Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech from Cincinnati, where he threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2025, before completing a 35-day in-patient rehabilitation program for gambling addiction. Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec announced an appeal, arguing gambling addiction is a clinically recognized behavioral disorder. Sorsby’s legal team, led by Jeffrey Kessler — the attorney behind the House settlement — is seeking a court injunction in Lubbock County, with a hearing set for June 1.
