Hurricanes Blank Canadiens 4-0 in Game 4, Lead ECF 3-1
The Carolina Hurricanes moved within one victory of the Stanley Cup Final with a dominant 4-0 shutout win over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final at Bell Centre on Wednesday. Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal and Logan Stankoven scored in a span of 2:47 late in the first period, with Andrei Svechnikov adding an empty-net goal. Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 18 saves for his third shutout of the playoffs, setting a Carolina franchise record. The Hurricanes outshot the Canadiens 19-3 in the third period and improved to 6-0 on the road in the postseason. Carolina leads the best-of-seven series 3-1.

Four-Time Stanley Cup Champion Claude Lemieux Dies at 60
Claude Lemieux, one of hockey’s most decorated playoff performers, died Thursday at the age of 60, the Montreal Canadiens announced. The Buckingham, Quebec native won four Stanley Cups — with the Canadiens in 1986, the New Jersey Devils in 1995 and 2000, and the Colorado Avalanche in 1996. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1995 after scoring 13 goals in 20 playoff games for New Jersey. His 234 playoff appearances rank sixth in NHL history and his 80 playoff goals rank ninth. He worked in recent years as a player agent. Lemieux served as the Canadiens’ Bell Centre torchbearer during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final on Monday.

Golden Knights Await Cup Final Opponent After Sweeping Avalanche
The Vegas Golden Knights are resting and awaiting their opponent in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final after sweeping the Colorado Avalanche out of the Western Conference Finals. Vegas closed out the series with a 2-1 Game 4 victory Tuesday, having won each of the four games by scores of 4-2, 3-1, 5-3, and 2-1. Mitch Marner leads all 2026 playoff scorers with 21 points through 16 games, while Jack Eichel adds 18. Their potential Final opponent will be determined Friday night when Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final between Carolina and Montreal tips off at 8 p.m. ET in Raleigh.

Defenseman Evan Bouchard did not return after a first-period hit from American Ryan Lindgren, who was ejected.

Norway Reaches First-Ever IIHF World Championship Semifinals
Norway defeated Latvia 2-0 on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the 2026 IIHF World Championship for the first time in the nation’s history, guaranteeing their best-ever finish in the tournament. Stanley Cup Final to Begin June 2 or June 4 Depending on ECF Outcome
The NHL announced Thursday that the 2026 Stanley Cup Final will begin Tuesday, June 2 if the Carolina Hurricanes clinch their series Friday night, or Thursday, June 4 if the Montreal Canadiens force a Game 6. Either way, the Vegas Golden Knights — the Western Conference champion — will open on the road, having finished the regular season with fewer points than both potential opponents. Vegas finished with 95 points and 39 wins, making them the first team since the 2002 Carolina Hurricanes to reach the Final after winning fewer than 40 games, according to ESPN Insights. The series match-up will be confirmed Friday night in Raleigh.
