Germany Hands USMNT a Pre-Tournament Reality Check
Germany handed the United States a 2-1 defeat at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, days before the World Cup opens. Kai Havertz struck in the second minute after a defensive lapse, and Leroy Sané added a second before the hour despite Antonee Robinson’s equalizer — a fierce volley from 23 yards. The result came before a record crowd of 63,636 at the final U.S. tune-up. Manager Mauricio Pochettino’s side now turns attention to their Group D opener against Paraguay on June 12. Defender Chris Richards, absent with an ankle injury, remains doubtful for that match.

Canada Closes Send-Off Series With 1-1 Draw Against Ireland
Canada drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland at Stade Saputo in Montréal on Thursday, closing out their pre-World Cup send-off series. Alphonso Davies in a Race Against Time for Canada’s World Cup Opener
Canada’s most important player may not be fit in time for the World Cup opener on home soil. Alphonso Davies, who has not appeared for the national team since March 2025, is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained on May 6 during Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain. The initial five-week prognosis places his return around the June 12 opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. “Anything is possible,” Davies said alongside coach Jesse Marsch. “It all depends on how the recovery is going.” Marsch has suggested Davies is unlikely to feature before Canada’s June 18 match with Qatar.

Richards’ World Cup Status in Doubt After Ankle Setback
U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Germany that center back Chris Richards would not feature, leaving his availability for the World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 12 uncertain. Richards tore ankle ligaments during a Crystal Palace league match on May 17 and has not played since. Pochettino described himself as “annoyed” by the injury situation, saying Richards was not ready to compete and to play. The United States will assess his fitness in the days following the Germany result, with the opener against Paraguay now less than a week away.
