Canada Claims First World Cup Victory with 6-0 Rout of Qatar
Canada claimed its first-ever FIFA World Cup victory Thursday in Vancouver, routing Qatar 6-0 at BC Place. Jonathan David scored a hat trick, matching Argentina’s Lionel Messi as the tournament’s only player with three goals in one match, and ended a 96-year wait for a CONCACAF hat trick at a World Cup — the last was American Bert Patenaude in 1930. Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba and a Mohamed Al Mannai own goal completed the scoring. Two Qatar red cards helped the margin, equaling the host-nation record set by Italy (1934), Brazil (1950) and Argentina (1978). Canada tops Group B on goal difference.

Mexico Becomes First Nation Through to World Cup Knockouts with 1-0 Win Over South Korea
Mexico became the first team to advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage, defeating South Korea 1-0 on Thursday at Estadio Azteca. Luis Romo scored in the 50th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball spilled by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu after a collision with defender Lee Gi-hyuk in the penalty area. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel kept South Korea at bay with two instinctive saves late on. The victory, Mexico’s second of the tournament, clinched first place in Group A and set up a round-of-32 clash. El Tri opened with a win over South Africa and have now gone through two group matches unbeaten.

Switzerland Storm Back to Win 4-1, Set Up Winner-Take-All Canada Clash
Switzerland surged to four goals in the final 16 minutes to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 on Thursday, taking the lead in Group B and setting up a winner-take-all clash with Canada on June 24 in Vancouver. Substitute Johan Manzambi scored twice and Rubén Vargas added another after Tarik Muharemovic was sent off in the 84th minute, with captain Granit Xhaka adding a late penalty. Canada and Switzerland are level on six points but Canada lead by virtue of superior goal difference following their 6-0 thrashing of Qatar. A Canada win or draw earns them first place; Switzerland must win to top the group.
