Hamilton Storms to Sprint Qualifying Pole at Silverstone, Beating Title Leader Antonelli
Lewis Hamilton stormed to pole position for Saturday's British Grand Prix sprint race, topping all three segments of Sprint Qualifying at Silverstone on Friday. The seven-time world champion set a 1m28.376s lap to beat Mercedes title leader Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds, with Max Verstappen third for Red Bull a further 0.321 seconds adrift. Hamilton led free practice before controlling the entire qualifying session, calling the result an amazing surprise given Ferrari had struggled at the Red Bull Ring the previous weekend. Championship leader Antonelli starts second for the 17-lap sprint, while George Russell managed only fifth despite winning last weekend in Austria.

Ferrari Surprises Rivals With Unexpected Silverstone Pace After Recent Struggles
Ferrari's unexpected competitiveness at power-sensitive Silverstone left both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell surprised after Friday's Sprint Qualifying. Hamilton admitted he questioned whether the SF-26's pace was real after Ferrari had struggled at the Red Bull Ring a week earlier. Russell, beaten to fifth, said Ferrari's sprint pole performance was not making sense, noting the team had been on the back foot with power unit management throughout 2026. Ferrari's turnaround followed their second ADUO engine upgrade allocation used in Austria, with the revised power unit appearing particularly well suited to Silverstone's high-speed layout and energy harvesting zones.
Vasseur Fires Back at Wolff Over Ferrari Upgrade 'Cheating' Accusation at British GP
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur fired back at Mercedes boss Toto Wolff on Friday after Wolff suggested Ferrari were unsustainably throwing money at their 2026 car. Wolff had argued Ferrari's rapid aerodynamic upgrade rate would exhaust their budget cap before season's end, calling the team seemingly limitless. Vasseur responded with pointed irony at Silverstone, calling the criticism quite ironic coming from Toto and Mercedes, adding that when Red Bull or Mercedes develops they are called geniuses but when Ferrari develops they are accused of cheating. The dispute follows Ferrari's eight-item Barcelona upgrade package and a second ADUO engine upgrade taken in Austria.

Cadillac Unveils Stars and Stripes Livery to Celebrate America's 250th Birthday at British GP
Cadillac Formula 1 is racing in a special stars and stripes livery this weekend to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The team replaced its standard black and white colours with a full red, white and blue scheme featuring stars and stripes on the front wing and engine cover, extending to garage dressing, driver helmets and team kit. The timing aligns with July 4 falling on the same day as the British GP sprint race and main qualifying at Silverstone. Cadillac, which entered as Formula 1's 11th constructor at the start of 2026, celebrated both Independence Day and America's growing presence in the sport.

Verstappen Slams F1 Lego Parade: 'Drivers Shouldn't Look Like Kids and Clowns'
Max Verstappen publicly criticised Formula 1's Lego drivers' parade ahead of Sunday's British Grand Prix, saying the event makes drivers look like kids and clowns. The four-time world champion argued the minicar spectacle undermines the sport's image and said he would prefer a traditional truck-based drivers' parade. Verstappen said at Silverstone that F1 drivers should not look like kids and clowns trying to ram into each other. Lewis Hamilton separately expressed concerns about the event. All 22 drivers are scheduled to race individual Lego minicars built from 28,000 bricks each, capable of reaching 25km/h, 90 minutes before Sunday's race start.

Verstappen-McLaren Discussions Emerge at Silverstone as 2027 Driver Market Heats Up
Preliminary talks between Max Verstappen's management and McLaren CEO Zak Brown have emerged at the British Grand Prix, fuelling speculation about the Dutchman's 2027 future. Verstappen holds a contract exit clause enabling him to join a rival team from 2027 if he falls outside the top two in the championship by an August deadline. Brown confirmed the meeting but said no seat is available, praising Norris and Piastri as capable of beating Verstappen on equal machinery. Piastri said the rumours change nothing for him given his contract. Analysis suggested the discussions may partly serve as leverage with Red Bull rather than indicating a firm transfer intention.
Russell Eyes First Home British GP Win as Title Deficit Sits at 40 Points
George Russell arrives at his home British Grand Prix hoping to build on his Austrian victory, having cut Kimi Antonelli's championship lead to 40 points. However, Russell endured a difficult Friday, finishing only fifth in Sprint Qualifying as Ferrari's unexpected pace and Red Bull's resurgence left the Mercedes driver behind. Antonelli leads the 2026 Drivers' Championship with 171 points, Russell second with 131 and Hamilton third with 125. Russell has never won at Silverstone and expressed frustration at Ferrari's competitiveness, saying their power unit form at the circuit was not making sense given recent struggles. Autosport identified the British GP as potentially his best home race opportunity yet.

Russell Predicts Better Racing at Silverstone as 2026 Energy Rules Favour High-Speed Circuits
George Russell predicted Sunday's British Grand Prix will deliver more competitive racing than recent rounds due to Silverstone's interaction with Formula 1's 2026 energy rules. Russell drew comparisons to Australia and China, noting Silverstone's sustained high-speed sections create different energy harvesting and deployment cycles compared to stop-start tracks. The 2026 regulations mandate a near-equal split between combustion and electrical power, and Silverstone's layout reduces the energy starvation that has restricted overtaking at other circuits this season. Ferrari's dominant Friday performance appeared to support the theory, with the SF-26 showing particular strength in the high-speed sectors where energy management most benefits the car.

All 22 F1 Drivers to Race Custom Lego Minicars Before Sunday's British Grand Prix
Formula 1 is staging a Lego drivers' parade before Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with all 22 drivers set to race individual minicars built from 28,000 Lego bricks each. The minicars, designed by 20 Lego Group engineers, are modelled on each driver's 2026 team livery and can reach 25km/h. The parade runs 90 minutes before the race start at 1:30pm BST, with live coverage on Formula 1's YouTube channel from 1pm. Unlike the Miami event in 2025 where drivers shared cars between teammates, every driver at Silverstone has their own individual vehicle. The event returns despite Verstappen's criticism that it is unsuitable for Formula 1's prestige.
