Padres snap 8-game skid behind Machado's 3-run blast, Sears' gem

San Diego right-hander JP Sears delivered five scoreless innings of one-hit baseball Sunday at Dodger Stadium, while Manny Machado launched a three-run homer in the fourth inning to power the Padres to a 5-2 victory. The win snapped San Diego’s eight-game losing streak — the club’s longest skid since 2013 — and gave the Padres their first win since June 26. Machado’s 407-foot blast to center field, his 18th of the season, accounted for all the damage the Padres needed. Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. added RBI singles for insurance. Manager Craig Stammen was ejected only three pitches into the game, but it didn’t slow the Padres down.

Mets survive Braves' stunning ninth-inning rally, Williams notches 13th save

In a wild, rain-delayed finish on Star-Spangled Sunday, the Mets defeated Atlanta 10-9 to snap a streak of 12 losses in 14 games. A.J. Ewing blasted his fifth home run, Juan Soto delivered a two-run single and Francisco Lindor added an RBI hit as New York built a commanding 10-3 lead. The Braves mounted a stunning ninth-inning charge — Drake Baldwin’s grand slam drew Atlanta within one — before closer Devin Williams struck out Dominic Smith with runners on second and third to record his 13th save of the season and preserve the Mets’ victory.

Joe Ryan dominates as Twins claim first series win at Yankee Stadium since 2014

Joe Ryan was untouchable at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, tossing seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts — tying his season high — as the Minnesota Twins posted a 6-1 victory to claim the series. It was Minnesota’s first series win at Yankee Stadium since 2014. Ryan scattered three hits and walked one, and Brooks Lee contributed three hits including an RBI single in the fourth inning. Royce Lewis added a two-run single in the fifth, and the Twins capitalized on a Volpe error for two unearned runs. The Yankees have now lost nine of their last ten games.

Cubs' 4-run sixth rally tops Cardinals; Walker blasts 20th homer

Chicago avoided a series sweep with a 6-4 win over St. Louis at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Jordan Walker turned in a stunning sixth inning: his 20th home run of the season, a three-run shot, gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead before the Cubs responded with four runs on two Cardinals errors in the bottom half. Nico Hoerner drove in two runs during the Chicago rally. Walker added a sacrifice fly in the eighth for his 67th RBI of the season, tied for most in the majors. Drew Pomeranz earned his first win since rejoining the Cubs on Friday; Jacob Webb collected his third save.

Hancock's 2nd straight shutout start extends Mariners' scoreless streak to 24 innings

Emerson Hancock logged another masterful outing for Seattle, throwing seven shutout innings of two-hit baseball Sunday at T-Mobile Park to lead the Mariners to a 4-0 win over Toronto. Hancock’s second consecutive seven-inning shutout start extended the Mariners’ staff scoreless streak to 24 innings, dating back to the third inning of the series opener. Mitch Garver provided the offense with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Gabe Speier and Andrés Muñoz then combined to close out the final two frames, completing the three-game series win over the Blue Jays.

Contreras crushes 446-foot 20th HR as Red Sox complete sweep of Angels

Willson Contreras crushed a 446-foot homer to left-center — his 20th of the season, off the bat at 112 mph — and Jarren Duran also went deep as the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 7-5 victory Sunday, their eighth win in the last 10 games. The sweep was dampened by a concern: starter Ranger Suarez, named to the AL All-Star team just Saturday, exited after 2⅓ innings with left adductor tightness. Boston’s bullpen allowed two runs over 6⅓ innings to preserve the victory.

INJURYTRANSACTIONS

Yankees place Rodón on IL with elbow inflammation; UCL intact

The New York Yankees placed left-hander Carlos Rodón on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation, retroactive to late June — nearly two months into his return from offseason elbow surgery. An MRI revealed heavy inflammation, though Rodón’s UCL remains intact. He will receive platelet-rich plasma and orthovisc injections and enter a throwing shutdown; manager Aaron Boone estimated the no-throw period at a few days to a week. Rodón said the elbow has bothered him for a couple of weeks. With the July 31 trade deadline approaching, New York’s rotation depth has taken a significant hit.

Woodruff returns to IL with shoulder inflammation; torn labrum confirmed

Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff has landed on the 15-day injured list for the second time this season with right shoulder inflammation. Woodruff’s velocity dropped sharply during his July 4 start against Arizona — his fastball fell from 92.5 mph to 86.6 mph and his changeup from 82.9 to 76.6 mph — leading to an early exit. The Brewers confirmed a torn labrum with a recurring cyst as the underlying diagnosis. It was his third start since returning from a nearly two-month absence. Left-hander Drew Rom was recalled from Triple-A to fill the roster spot.

Braves' Kim placed on IL with finger inflammation; batting .068 since activation

Atlanta placed shortstop Ha-Seong Kim on the 10-day injured list on Sunday, retroactive to July 1, with inflammation in his right middle finger — the same finger surgically repaired after Kim tore a ligament slipping on ice in his native South Korea in January, shortly after signing a one-year, $20 million deal with the Braves. Kim has batted just .068 (5-for-73) since being activated off the injured list earlier this season. As corresponding roster moves, Kyle Farmer was activated from the 10-day IL and JR Ritchie was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett.
