Portland Timbers made history Thursday night at Lumen Field, routing the short-handed Seattle Sounders 5-1 in the MLS return from the World Cup break. Wildfire Smoke Forces Postponement of MLS and CPL Fixtures on Both Sides of the Border
Canadian wildfire smoke forced two North American soccer fixtures off the calendar Thursday. MLS postponed the Chicago Fire–Vancouver Whitecaps match at Soldier Field after Chicago air quality exceeded the federation’s outdoor sport safety threshold. The game, which was set to mark Robert Lewandowski’s MLS debut, has been rescheduled to October 6. In Hamilton, the Canadian Premier League also postponed Forge FC’s home match against Pacific FC after conditions deteriorated in the final hours before kickoff due to wildfires in northern Ontario. Forge sat atop the CPL table with 31 points. No makeup date has been announced for the Forge–Pacific fixture.
MLS Restarts With New Global Stars as Record 45 Players Return From World Cup
Major League Soccer resumed its 2026 season Thursday following a six-week FIFA World Cup pause, with two global superstars waiting for debut opportunities.
