Mavrik Bourque scored his first NHL hat trick and added an assist, sparking a remarkable comeback as the Dallas Stars rallied from a 3–0 first-period deficit to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6–5 on Monday. Carolina had rested several key players for the contest. Philadelphia will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round. It is the Flyers’ first postseason appearance in five years, capping a remarkable turnaround season.

Buffalo Sabres Clinch Atlantic Division Title, Ending NHL’s Longest-Ever Playoff Drought with a 50-Win Season
The Buffalo Sabres clinched the Atlantic Division title Monday, ending the longest playoff drought in NHL history. Tage Thompson scored twice as Buffalo secured its first division championship since 2009–10. The Sabres reached 50 wins (50-23-8, 108 points) for only the third time in franchise history. The 14-year run without playoff hockey was the longest in NHL history, and it is now finished. Buffalo will face the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference first round with home-ice advantage. The Sabres also became just the fifth team in NHL history to clinch a division title after trailing by eight or more points in the standings at some point during the season.

Golden Knights One Point Away from Clinching Pacific Division Under Coach Tortorella’s 6-0-1 Run
The Vegas Golden Knights can clinch the Pacific Division title Wednesday night with at least one point against the Seattle Kraken. Vegas (38-26-17) would secure its fifth division championship since joining the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2017–18, a remarkable run of sustained success. The Golden Knights have been particularly dominant since John Tortorella replaced Bruce Cassidy as head coach mid-season, going 6-0-1 under his direction. A division title would lock Vegas into a first-round series against the Utah Mammoth, the Western Conference’s first wild card. The Kraken, eliminated from playoff contention, play their final home game of the season as reluctant spoilers.

Hurricanes Recall Goalie Kochetkov Ahead of Playoffs After Defying Season-Ending Surgery Prognosis
The Carolina Hurricanes recalled goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov and forward Felix Unger Sorum from the Chicago Wolves of the AHL on Monday ahead of the playoffs. Kochetkov was unable to play in Monday’s game against the Flyers due to a roster technicality but will be available when the postseason begins April 18. His return is a significant development for Carolina: the 26-year-old had not played in the NHL since December 20 due to a lower-body injury. Coach Rod Brind’Amour had said in late December that surgery was likely and Kochetkov would probably not play again this season. Instead, he played portions of two recent AHL games and is now playoff-ready.

Maple Leafs Miss Playoffs for First Time Since 2016 as Marner Departure and Goaltending Woes Doom Toronto
The Toronto Maple Leafs have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2015–16, ending a nine-year streak of postseason appearances. NHL.com and The Hockey News cited Mitch Marner’s departure as the pivotal factor: Toronto traded the winger to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade on July 1, 2025, and never replaced his 102-point production. The story took an especially bitter turn when the Leafs were eliminated the same day Marner scored a hat trick for Vegas. Goaltending inconsistency compounded Toronto’s troubles, with Anthony Stolarz battling injury and Joseph Woll unable to stabilize the position. General manager Brad Treliving was fired three days before the official elimination.
