Pogačar Outsprints Breakaway to Win Tour de Romandie Stage 1 and Seize Race Lead

Tadej Pogačar claimed his fifth victory of the 2026 season on Stage 1 of the Tour de Romandie, outsprinting a four-man breakaway to win in Martigny on Wednesday and seize the overall race lead. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider attacked on the Catégorie 1 climb of Ovronnaz with 33 kilometres remaining, animating a select group that also included Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), and Jørgen Nordhagen (Visma-Lease a Bike). Pogačar then timed his sprint perfectly to edge Lipowitz at the line. The result moves the reigning World Champion into the yellow jersey with Stage 2 from Rue to Vucherens set for Thursday.

Carapaz Joins Almeida and Landa in Pulling Out of Giro d'Italia, Stripping Race of All Three 2025 Podium Finishers

Richard Carapaz, winner of the 2019 Giro d'Italia and third-placed finisher in 2025, confirmed Wednesday he will not start the 2026 edition on May 8, calling it a complete disappointment. The EF Education-EasyPost rider is still recovering from surgery to remove a perineal cyst contracted following the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and said the wound healed slower than expected. Carapaz will redirect his season toward the Tour de France. His withdrawal follows those of João Almeida (illness) and Mikel Landa (pelvic fracture), stripping the race of all three 2025 Giro podium finishers. Jonas Vingegaard now leads an altered but still formidable contenders list.

Five Stages That Will Define the 2026 Giro d'Italia: Blockhaus, Pila, Dolomites, and a 40km Time Trial

With the 2026 Giro d'Italia eight days away, Cyclingnews identified five stages likely to define the race outcome. Stage 7's 246-kilometre slog to the Blockhaus summit finish is the race's first genuine GC test, while Stage 14's return to Pila after a 30-year absence at 16.5 kilometres and 7.1 percent average gradient offers another selective test. Stage 10's 40.2-kilometre individual time trial on the Tuscan coast will advantage time trial specialists such as Filippo Ganna. The race's likely winner will emerge across the Dolomites in Stages 19 and 20, with the final summit at Piancavallo.

Polish sprinter Stanisław Aniłkowski (Uno-X Mobility) took his first victory in almost three years at Stage 4 of the 2026 Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey from Marmaris to Fethiye on Wednesday, edging Riley Pickrell and Davide Persico in a bunch sprint finish.
