Vingegaard Targets Historic Grand Tour Trilogy at Giro d'Italia
Jonas Vingegaard arrives in Nessebar, Bulgaria for his first Giro d'Italia carrying a bold historical ambition. The Visma-Lease a Bike rider, who won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 and claimed the 2025 Vuelta a España, told Italian media: "I want to win the Giro and make history." Success would make Vingegaard the first rider since Chris Froome in 2018 to hold all three Grand Tour titles simultaneously. He recovered from an off-season training crash to win Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya before arriving in Bulgaria focused. The 109th Giro d'Italia opens Friday in Burgas.

Jonathan Milan Leads Sprint Hunt for Opening Maglia Rosa in Bulgaria
Jonathan Milan enters the 2026 Giro d'Italia as the sprint favourite for Friday's opening stage along Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. The Lidl-Trek rider, who has accumulated six sprint victories in 2026 including two at the UAE Tour, told reporters he is "a little more motivated" this year. Stage 1 covers 147 kilometres from Nessebar to Burgas, ending on the Boulevard Demokratsia in an uphill drag finish well-suited to powerful finishers. Milan will face competition from Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Ethan Vernon (NSN Cycling) and Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) in the battle to pull on the first maglia rosa of the race.

Carapaz Ruled Out of Giro d'Italia After Surgical Complication
Richard Carapaz will not start the 2026 Giro d'Italia after a surgical complication extended his recovery. The EF Education-EasyPost climber, who won the Corsa Rosa in 2019 and finished third in 2025, confirmed his withdrawal Wednesday, describing it as "a complete disappointment." Carapaz underwent surgery to remove a perineal cyst following the Volta a Catalunya in late March, initially projecting a swift return. The wound healed more slowly than anticipated, preventing adequate training. He will now target the Tour de France later in the summer. Carapaz joins João Almeida and Mikel Landa as the third major GC contender to withdraw before the Bulgaria start.

Almeida and Landa Also Ruled Out as Giro d'Italia GC Field Thins
The 2026 Giro d'Italia has shed two more general classification contenders. João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) confirmed he remains too ill to compete after a viral infection derailed his spring build-up, limiting him throughout the Volta a Catalunya. Almeida had been expected to challenge for the podium in Rome. Separately, Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) was ruled out after hospital scans revealed a pelvic fracture sustained when a race vehicle struck him during stage 2 of the Itzulia Basque Country, an injury initially missed by roadside medics. With Richard Carapaz also absent, none of the top three finishers from the 2025 Giro will race in Bulgaria on Friday.

Bulgaria's Giro d'Italia Grande Partenza Shadowed by Political Turmoil and Team Cost Disputes
The 2026 Giro d'Italia's Bulgarian Grande Partenza—a first in the race's 109-year history—has been marked by dual controversies. Bulgaria held its eighth snap election in five years just weeks before the race, though an unexpected parliamentary majority offers political stability. Teams and organiser RCS Sport are at odds over participation costs, with squads rejecting two offers from RCS over travel reimbursements for the logistically demanding foreign start. Bulgaria's national cycling federation also faces UCI sanctions, its president and vice president suspended last year for ethics violations. All eyes now turn to Nessebar, where sprinters contest stage 1 on Friday along the Black Sea coast.

O'Connor, Gall and Hindley Emerge as Challengers to Vingegaard's Giro Ambitions
With Tadej Pogačar absent and João Almeida ruled out through illness, analysts identify three principal challengers to Jonas Vingegaard at the 2026 Giro d'Italia. Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), fifth at last year's Giro, is rated the most dangerous counter-puncher, capable of winning solo from a breakaway in high mountains. Felix Gall (Decathlon) arrives with podium ambitions after strong spring results including sixth at the Volta a Catalunya. Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), a former Giro champion, co-leads alongside Italian hope Giulio Pellizzari. Egan Bernal and Adam Yates add further depth. Vingegaard, winner of Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya, remains the clear pre-race favourite.

Red Bull KM Intermediate Sprints Repositioned Closer to Finishes in Revamped 2026 Giro Format
The Red Bull KM intermediate sprint returns to the 2026 Giro d'Italia with a tactical upgrade: organisers have repositioned the sprint point significantly closer to each stage finish, amplifying its influence on the overall classification. Bonus seconds of six, four and two are awarded at each kilometre sprint, with ten, six and four at stage finishes. A total prize pool of €130,000 is distributed across the 20 road stages. Race director Mauro Vegni argued the new placement will create "even more explosive" racing. With potential GC gaps measured in seconds, teams must now factor the intermediate sprint into their tactical calculus on every road stage of the 109th Giro.

Lappartient Pushes Mandatory GPS Tracking at All WorldTour Races After Tour de Romandie Row
UCI President David Lappartient has escalated his push for mandatory GPS rider tracking at all WorldTour events, warning the UCI "will have no option but to enforce" the technology if teams refuse to collaborate. The move follows a dispute at the Tour de Romandie Féminin, where five teams including Lidl-Trek and Visma-Lease a Bike were disqualified for non-compliance and subsequently filed a Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal. GPS tracking was introduced after Swiss junior Muriel Furrer died at the 2025 World Championships when her crash in remote woodland went undetected for 90 minutes. A Professional Cycling Council session on 21 May will address next steps.
