Mass Crash on Giro Stage 2 Forces Yates, Vine, and Soler Out of Race
A mass crash with 21km remaining on Giro d’Italia stage 2 eliminated three GC contenders and left the peloton in chaos. Five UAE Team Emirates-XRG riders went down, with Jay Vine suffering a concussion and elbow fracture and Marc Soler sustaining a pelvic fracture — both abandoning immediately. Adam Yates, initially cleared to continue, withdrew ahead of stage 3 after displaying delayed concussion symptoms. Derek Gee-West also crashed heavily, losing significant time after completing a solo chase to rejoin the field. The pile-up briefly neutralised racing as multiple ambulances tended to riders strewn across the Bulgarian road surface.

Thomas Silva Wins Stage 2 and Takes Pink Jersey in Historic First for Uruguay
Thomas Silva (XDS-Astana) made Giro d’Italia history on Saturday, winning stage 2 in Veliko Tarnovo to become the first Uruguayan rider ever to take a Grand Tour stage. The 24-year-old claimed victory in a reduced bunch sprint after Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) led a late attack in the final kilometre, only for the peloton to catch the move before the line. Tudor’s Florian Stork finished second and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) took third. Silva’s win moved him into the maglia rosa, displacing overnight leader Magnier after the Soudal-QuickStep sprinter was distanced on the hilly finale.
