Arrieta Wins Stage 5 in Potenza After Crashes and a Wrong Turn
Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) claimed one of the most improbable Giro d’Italia stage victories in years on Wednesday, winning the rain-soaked Stage 5 into Potenza after a crash and a wrong turn in the final kilometres. Arrieta and breakaway companion Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) both went down on slippery roads inside the final 15km. The Spaniard then took the wrong fork at a Y-junction with 2.3km remaining, yet still chased Eulálio down and sprinted past in the closing metres. Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana) led in the main chasers over three minutes behind. It was Arrieta’s first Grand Tour stage win.

Ciccone’s Heroic Rain-Soaked Chase Not Enough to Defend Giro Lead
Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) surrendered the maglia rosa on Wednesday after a heroic but ultimately futile solo chase through driving rain on Stage 5 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia. The Italian had taken the lead on Stage 4 but was caught in the main GC peloton when a 12-rider breakaway rode clear over 200km from Praia a Mare to Potenza. Despite launching a lone pursuit with 50km to go, Ciccone could not close the gap on the escapees, ultimately losing the pink jersey to Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) by over six minutes. Ciccone now sits sixth overall at 6:12 and will target stage wins.

Wrong Turns, Crashes, and a Smashed Car Window: Stage 5 Was Cycling at Its Most Chaotic
Stage 5 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia on Wednesday produced arguably the most chaotic finale in the race’s recent history, with crashes, navigation errors, and wrong turns turning a straightforward two-rider breakaway into a breathless spectacle. Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) crashed separately on rain-soaked roads in the final 15km, with Arrieta then missing a junction and riding the wrong side of a road split with 2.3km to go. Both riders regrouped and sprinted for the line, with Arrieta taking the win. Elsewhere, Tudor Pro Cycling’s Mathys Rondel collided with a UAE team car, smashing the rear window but escaping injury.

Merlier Opens Tour de Hongrie with Commanding Stage 1 Sprint
Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) launched the Tour de Hongrie with a dominant sprint victory on Stage 1 in Békéscsaba, Hungary on Wednesday. The Belgian European champion beat Juan Sebastián Molano (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) in a high-speed 143km opener. The result marks a significant confidence boost for Merlier, who is using the Hungarian 2.Pro race as Tour de France sprint preparation, with Soudal-QuickStep’s Giro focus falling to Paul Magnier. Stage 2 on Thursday covers 202km from Szarvas to Paks, the longest stage of the race, with a steep 7% climb in the final kilometre offering a potential GC shake-up.

Giddings Latest Victim as Illness and Crashes Leave Lotto-Intermaréché With Three Riders
Lotto-Intermaréché lost a sixth rider at the 2026 Giro d’Italia on Wednesday when debutant Josh Giddings was forced to retire from Stage 5 due to lower back pain from a Stage 2 crash. The young Briton had been called up at the last minute as a replacement for Liam Slock, himself sidelined by the gastroenteritis outbreak ravaging the squad. Arnaud De Lie and Milan Menten both abandoned in earlier stages with illness believed caused by campylobacter bacteria from cow manure encountered during the Famenne Ardenne Classic in Belgium the week before the race. Fourteen riders in total have now abandoned the 2026 Giro.
