Antonelli Leads Championship by 43 Points but Says Title Is Not on His Mind

Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli says winning the 2026 world title is not on his mind despite a 43-point lead after five rounds. The 19-year-old, who has won four consecutive grands prix, saw his advantage grow in Montreal after team-mate George Russell retired with a power unit failure while leading. Russell had outqualified Antonelli at both Canada sessions by 0.068 seconds each time. Antonelli said he is focusing race by race and vowed to keep raising the bar. Max Verstappen praised his consistency, while Hamilton contrasted the Italian’s current support structure with his own difficult 2007 title campaign.

Mercedes Faces Test of How to Manage Russell vs. Antonelli Title Duel

Mercedes must decide how to manage an intensifying internal title fight between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell after their Montreal duel came close to a collision. Motorsport.com writers from five countries gave differing verdicts: most agreed Mercedes should intervene if a crash appears likely, while some argue the team’s dominant car makes point losses manageable. Team boss Toto Wolff acknowledged he would have imposed team orders had rivals been close behind. With Antonelli’s aggressive style drawing Verstappen comparisons and Russell pushing back, Wolff faces a dynamic reminiscent of the Hamilton–Rosberg tension that divided Mercedes in 2016.

Drivers Warn Entertaining Canada Race Does Not Mean 2026 Rules Are Fixed

Canadian GP podium finishers Kimi Antonelli, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen warned that last weekend’s entertaining Montreal race does not signal the 2026 power unit regulations are working. Energy management still triggers drivers, with Hamilton saying power drops halfway down the straight feel contrary to motorsport’s spirit, and Verstappen calling the management demands not pure. Improvements made in Miami eased concerns, but all three podium drivers stressed work remains for 2027 rule changes, particularly around increasing combustion power. The FIA has allowed teams more system allowance, improving racing, but qualifying remains a major point of concern.

Gucci Becomes Alpine’s F1 Title Partner from 2027, Replacing BWT

Luxury fashion house Gucci will become Alpine’s F1 title partner from 2027, ending BWT’s tenure as title sponsor. The Enstone outfit will race as Gucci Racing Alpine under a multi-year deal, with the car adopting Gucci’s livery colours — a departure from the current blue and pink scheme. Former Alpine CEO Luca de Meo, now heading Gucci’s parent company Kering, played a key role in brokering the deal. Gucci CEO Francesca Bellettini called it the first luxury fashion house to serve as title partner in Formula 1. McLaren announced Mastercard as its 2026 title partner earlier this year.

Haas to Decide 2027 Driver Line-Up by July as Ocon’s Seat Under Threat

Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu says the American outfit will decide its 2027 driver line-up between May and July, amid growing doubt over Esteban Ocon’s future. The Frenchman has scored just one point in the first five grands prix of 2026, 17 behind team-mate Oliver Bearman, who finished 10th in Montreal to leave Haas seventh in the constructors’ championship. Komatsu declined to confirm whether he would retain both drivers if forced to decide today. Bearman is considered secure; candidates to replace Ocon may include Ferrari reserve Rafael Camara and reserve driver Jack Doohan.

Villeneuve’s Final Race Helmet Sells for Record $1.25 Million at Auction

The helmet worn by Gilles Villeneuve at the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix — his final F1 race — sold at auction for a record-breaking $1.25 million, exceeding €1 million, according to Darren Jack, CEO of Canadian company Hall of Fame Collection. The sum surpasses the previous record held by an Ayrton Senna helmet from the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, which sold last year for £720,000 (approximately €829,000). Villeneuve’s red and black GPA helmet had been in private collection for nearly 30 years. Only around five race helmets worn by Villeneuve are believed to still exist.
