Scary Movie Opens to $52.7M Franchise Record as Wayans Brothers Return
Scary Movie opened to an estimated $52.7 million this weekend, setting a franchise record for the spoof series and marking the Wayans Brothers’ first return to the IP they created since 2001’s Scary Movie 2. Power Ballad Goes Wide on 1,200 Screens as Lionsgate Bets on Counterprogramming
Power Ballad, the music comedy from director John Carney (Once, Sing Street), expands to 1,200 theaters today through Lionsgate as counterprogramming against summer’s tentpole competition. Starring Paul Rudd as a wedding singer and Nick Jonas as a washed-up boy-band star, the film won rapturous responses at SXSW and the Sands Film Festival. Lionsgate, which also released Michael — the Michael Jackson biopic on course for $1 billion in worldwide grosses — is betting on word-of-mouth and strong reviews to sustain a film without a YouTube phenom or pre-existing franchise at its center. An original song, “How to Write a Song Without You,” by composer Gary Clark, anchors the film.
