Man Sentenced to 4 Years in $22M Pearson Airport Gold Heist
Arslan Chaudhary, 44, was sentenced to four years in prison on April 9 for his central role in the $22-million gold heist at Toronto Pearson International Airport — described by police as the largest gold theft in Canadian history. Chaudhary was also ordered to pay $22 million in restitution over 40 years. The April 2023 theft saw 400 kilograms of gold and $2.5 million in foreign currency stolen from a Pearson cargo area. A court found Chaudhary was the most involved in the planning and helped move the gold out of Canada. He received credit for 174 days already served.
Toronto Police Corruption Probe Claims Another Arrest
A 27-year-old Toronto man was arrested in connection with Project South, the sweeping police corruption investigation that has rocked the Toronto Police Service. The man faces firearm trafficking charges in the latest arrest tied to the probe, which has now resulted in charges against seven active Toronto officers, one retired officer, 19 additional suspects, and one jail guard. Project South, which includes allegations of conspiracy to commit murder, represents one of the most serious internal investigations in TPS history. Charges continue to mount as investigators work to untangle a web of criminal activity allegedly involving members of the force.
GO Transit Shuts Down Two Lines for Weekend Track Work
GO Transit will suspend all service on the Lakeshore East and Stouffville lines this weekend, April 11-12, affecting 21 stations across roughly 100 kilometres of track. The shutdown accommodates essential signalling and track maintenance. Lakeshore East passengers will find no trains at Rouge Hill, Guildwood, Eglinton, Scarborough, or Danforth stations; the Stouffville line will see no service at Milliken, Agincourt, or Kennedy. Bus replacement service will operate on both corridors. Regular train service on both lines is expected to resume Monday, April 13.
