AdaptHealth discloses patient data stolen in cyberattack

AdaptHealth, a home health equipment supplier providing CPAP machines, continuous glucose monitors and other devices, disclosed that a recent cyberattack resulted in patient data being stolen. A threat actor gained unauthorized access to company systems through a social engineering attack and exfiltrated data including personally identifiable information, protected health information, and stored password files associated with insurance billing. The company confirmed that certain external electronic health record system portals were accessed. The threat actor notified AdaptHealth on June 15 that it had taken data. The full scope of affected data sets has not yet been determined. The incident has been contained, and AdaptHealth says operations have not been materially impacted.

Epic President Sumit Rana to step down in August

Epic Systems President Sumit Rana announced he will step down from the company, with his last day set for August 14. In a July 3 email to staff, Rana cited family responsibilities following the death of his father last November, noting his mother lives in India and he wants to be present for her. Rana, who joined Epic nearly 30 years ago and served as executive vice president of research and development, was widely seen as a possible successor to founder and CEO Judy Faulkner, who is 82. Epic said a small group of leaders he and others mentored will take on additional responsibilities.

Nurse AI adoption outpaces hospital strategy, survey finds

Nurses are adopting AI tools at a pace that is outrunning hospital strategy, according to the Incredible Health 2026 Annual State of Nursing report released July 7. The survey of 2,240 nurses found that 44 percent now use AI at work, up from 15 percent a year ago. Yet 46 percent reported receiving no AI training from their employer. Top uses include documentation and charting at 37 percent, patient education materials at 37 percent, and drug or clinical reference lookups at 32 percent. Nurses involved in selecting tools were more likely to use them, with an 81 percent adoption rate compared to 62 percent among those not involved in selection.

AI accountability is now healthcare’s next big challenge

As AI becomes a routine part of care delivery, health systems are finding that success depends less on deploying new models than on governing existing ones. Angela Adams, CEO of Inflo Health, says healthcare has entered an era of AI accountability in which C-suite and clinical leaders face growing pressure to understand where AI influences care, who owns those decisions, and how oversight should work. She argues that many organizations cannot answer a deceptively simple question: where exactly is AI affecting patient care? Accountability for AI tools, she contends, should be assigned before deployment, not reconstructed after a patient has been harmed, and must span clinicians, vendors, and provider organizations.

UC San Diego Health launches Institute for Applied Health Intelligence

UC San Diego Health has launched the Institute for Applied Health Intelligence to bridge the gap between AI research and clinical practice. The institute brings together more than 50 faculty members and 750 trainees from six schools across the university. Dr. Amy Sitapati serves as inaugural director. The institute is organized around three pillars: implementation leadership, training and education, and innovation, outcomes and research. Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and UCSD Health CEO Patrice Maysent were quoted at the launch. The initiative reflects growing recognition that health systems need dedicated institutional infrastructure to translate AI research findings into safe, effective clinical applications at scale.

Mayo Clinic reviews 100-plus AI clinical apps with evidence-based oversight process

Mayo Clinic has reviewed more than 100 artificial intelligence clinical applications this year alone as part of an executive-led oversight process focused on ensuring AI tools are safe before deployment. Mayo Clinic Platform President Dr. John Halamka and senior research analyst Paul Cerrato described the process, which covers factors including AI complexity, clinical setting, performance and patient safety, user training, workflow integration, privacy and security, and life-cycle management. Complex AI tools that could affect decision-making in time-urgent or critical clinical scenarios may not be used at Mayo without proactive human review by qualified clinical users. Halamka has long argued that clinicians who use AI will replace those who do not.

Brook.ai and SRHO partner to expand AI-enabled remote care across 275-plus hospitals

Brook.ai has partnered with SRHO, a consortium of more than 275 hospitals spanning 20 states, to expand AI-enabled remote care for patients with chronic conditions. The Brook.ai platform combines agentic AI, remote clinical teams, and connected monitoring devices and has been trained on more than five million patient care conversations. The partnership targets chronic disease management outside traditional clinical settings, aiming to reach patients who are underserved by standard in-person care models. Brook.ai CEO Oren Nissim was quoted in the announcement. The deal extends Brook.ai’s reach significantly, leveraging SRHO’s hospital network to deploy AI-assisted remote care across a broad patient population.

Pediatric care deserts need a new delivery model, not just more clinicians

Nearly four in five U.S. counties are pediatric care deserts, yet adding clinicians and building clinics will not close the gap, argues Dr. Patricia Hayes, chief medical officer of Imagine Pediatrics. Hayes says the underlying problem is structural: traditional pediatric care assumes families can repeatedly travel to appointments and coordinate specialists during business hours, assumptions that frequently fail children with medically complex conditions. Imagine Pediatrics provides 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week virtual and in-home care for children with special healthcare needs. Hayes describes the medical home as an ongoing clinical relationship rather than a location, with caregivers treated as integral members of the care team, not peripheral concerns.
