Matthews Non-Committal on Leafs Future After Season-Ending MCL Tear

Auston Matthews acknowledged he cannot predict his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the team’s end-of-season media availability Wednesday. The Leafs captain had his season cut short in March after sustaining a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion in a knee-on-knee collision with Radko Gudas. Surgery followed, with an estimated 12-week recovery timeline. Matthews confirmed he will be physically ready for training camp but stopped short of any long-term commitment to Toronto, noting the uncertainty surrounding the organization following the firing of general manager Brad Treliving on March 30. Toronto missed the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Tkachuk Calls Trade Speculation a ‘Distraction,’ Senators GM Dismisses Rumors

Brady Tkachuk pushed back against growing trade speculation Wednesday following the Ottawa Senators’ first-round playoff sweep by Carolina, calling the persistent rumors a distraction given his stated commitment to the franchise. General manager Steve Staios had already dismissed the talk, calling it nonsense and confirming there have been no internal conversations about moving the captain. Tkachuk was absent from the team’s formal exit interviews earlier this week due to the birth of his second child but addressed reporters in a separate session. The New York Rangers have been frequently cited as a potential destination for the 26-year-old forward.
