Long Beach Preview: A Two-Point Title War Arrives at the Streets
The 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship arrives at Long Beach in its tightest state imaginable — just two points separate leader Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti Global, 156 pts) from Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing, 154 pts) entering Round 5. Palou’s dominant Barber triumph obliterated a 26-point Kirkwood cushion in a single afternoon, setting up a genuine street-circuit showdown on Long Beach’s 1.968-mile, 11-turn layout on April 19. Christian Lundgaard (Arrow McLaren, 121 pts) sits third, 35 points adrift but close enough to complicate any two-horse narrative. With two street-course wins already this season, Kirkwood will be keen to extend his lead on familiar terrain.
Palou Dominates Barber for 21st Career Win, Closes Title Gap to 2 Points
Alex Palou claimed the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park on March 29, leading 79 of 90 caution-free laps and winning by 13.3 seconds. Starting from pole, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver scored his third Barber win in four years and became the first driver to win multiple races in 2026. Christian Lundgaard finished second for his second podium of the campaign, while Graham Rahal completed the podium — his first top-three result since 2023. Rahal’s performance vaulted him from 16th to 12th in the standings. Team Penske newcomer David Malukas ran a composed fourth, underscoring Penske’s competitive start with new driver lineups.
Kirkwood Conquers Inaugural Arlington GP from P7 to Take Series Lead
Kyle Kirkwood delivered a masterclass charge through the field to win the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington on March 15, passing reigning champion Alex Palou with 15 laps remaining on the 2.73-mile street circuit encircling AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Starting seventh in his Andretti Global No. 27 Honda, Kirkwood earned his sixth career IndyCar victory and fourth on a street course, capitalizing on a late caution to seal the result over 70 laps. Will Power — racing his first event for Andretti Global — completed the podium in third. The win installed Kirkwood as championship leader by 26 points over Palou.
PREMA Racing Targets Long Beach Return as Ownership Crisis Enters Fourth Month
Italian outfit PREMA Racing remains absent from the 2026 IndyCar grid with no resolution in sight. Co-founders Angelo Rosin, son Rene, and executive Angelina Ertsou departed the firm in January after parent company DC Racing Solutions ran into financial difficulties, also destabilising sister operations Iron Lynx and Iron Dames. CEO Piers Phillips has spent months seeking new investment to complete a buyout. PREMA holds two Chevrolet engine leases but no charter — a structural disadvantage that complicates its recovery. Long Beach (April 17–19) is the earliest realistic return target, with Indianapolis 500 entry as the fallback goal if a deal can be finalised in time.
2026 Indy 500: 32 Entries Confirmed, One Spot Still Unfilled
The 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500, scheduled for May 24 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has 32 of 33 entries locked in with six weeks remaining on the clock. The field comprises 25 full-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES charter entries and seven one-off or “Indy-only” entrants. Abel Motorsports, which made its 500 debut last year, is preparing for a second appearance and remains a likely candidate to fill the final slot. If PREMA Racing cannot secure new ownership in time, AJ Foyt Racing and Juncos Hollinger Racing have separately expressed willingness to field an additional car to achieve the traditional 33-car starting field that has defined the event for decades.
AJ Foyt Racing and Crosslink Motorsports Form Driver Development Alliance
AJ Foyt Racing announced a strategic driver development partnership with Crosslink Motorsports on April 2, building a structured ladder from junior open-wheel racing to IndyCar. The collaboration links Crosslink’s established Formula 4 U.S. Championship and Formula Regional Americas programs with Foyt’s NTT INDYCAR SERIES and Indy NXT by Firestone entries. Crosslink drivers will gain access to Foyt engineering resources and development infrastructure. “Driver development has always been an important part of motorsports, and we’re excited to partner with Crosslink Motorsports to increase our commitment in that area,” said Foyt Racing president Larry Foyt. The agreement creates a clear multi-series pathway aimed at identifying IndyCar talent early.
Mick Schumacher Turns Heads with Quick Oval Adaptation in IndyCar Debut
Mick Schumacher has made an immediate impression in his maiden NTT INDYCAR SERIES season with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The 27-year-old former Formula 1 driver — son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher — posted the fourth-fastest qualifying speed at Phoenix Raceway in his first oval session, a result that drew widespread praise from the paddock. Signed by RLL in November 2025 to pilot the symbolic No. 47 Honda, Schumacher has demonstrated rapid adaptation to IndyCar’s radically different machinery and oval demands. His arrival signals fresh ambition from the team as it bids to restore its standing in the championship following a challenging 2025 campaign.
IndyCar Issues Safety Flap and Revised Street-Course Tire Mandates for 2026
INDYCAR has introduced two significant regulatory changes for 2026. On safety, new rear tire ramp flaps are mandatory for all Indianapolis Motor Speedway sessions — including the Open Test (April 28–29), qualifying, and the 500 itself. The carbon-fiber hinged components deploy in 180-degree spins to counter aerodynamic lift, reducing airborne crash risk by nearly 9% per computational fluid dynamics testing. On strategy, street-course events now require teams to run one set of primary (hard) tires and two sets of alternate (soft) tires — up from the previous single-alternate mandate. The tire change took effect at St. Petersburg and meaningfully expands strategic variation on temporary circuits.
