Rosenqvist Wins Closest Indianapolis 500 in History by 0.0233 Seconds

Felix Rosenqvist delivered the biggest win of his career at the 110th Indianapolis 500, edging David Malukas by .0233 of a second in the closest finish in the event’s history. Starting fourth after topping both the opening qualifying round and the Top 12 qualifying session, Rosenqvist surged on the final lap to beat Malukas to the Yard of Bricks. Scott McLaughlin, Pato O’Ward, and Marcus Armstrong finished within a half-second of Malukas in a five-driver sprint for third. The result vaulted Rosenqvist five spots in the Power Rankings to fourth and moved him to seventh in the championship, 97 points behind leader Alex Palou.

Palou Holds 37-Point Championship Lead as Malukas Rises to Second

Alex Palou carries a 37-point championship lead into the Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit after seven races, with six top-seven finishes to his name this season. He is seeking a record-tying fourth consecutive series championship and fifth in five years. David Malukas sits second in points, 37 back, after consecutive runner-up finishes at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May — first at the Sonsio Grand Prix road course and then in the Indianapolis 500. Christian Lundgaard is fourth at minus-78, with Pato O’Ward fifth at minus-85. Detroit is the first of 11 remaining races to decide the Astor Challenge Cup.

Mick Schumacher Named 2026 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year

Mick Schumacher has been named the 2026 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, earning a $50,000 bonus and bringing his total monetary award for the event to $218,800. The 27-year-old former Formula 1 driver, competing in a full IndyCar season with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, finished 18th in his debut 500 — the only one of four rookies to complete all 500 miles while remaining on the lead lap, which he achieved by unlapping himself with 12 laps to go. Caio Collet, Dennis Hauger, and Jacob Abel were the other contenders. Collet led nine laps before a fiery crash ended his race with eight laps remaining.

Indianapolis 500 Prize Purse Surpasses $30 Million, Setting New Record

The 110th Indianapolis 500 set a new prize purse record of $30,906,400, representing a more than 50 percent jump over the $20,283,000 distributed in 2025. The increase was driven largely by each of the 22 Leaders Circle teams receiving an additional $500,000 bonus. Winner Felix Rosenqvist, competing in a contract year with Meyer Shank Racing, took home a record winner’s share of $4.34 million. IndyCar and IMS President Doug Boles noted the race drew a back-to-back grandstand sellout crowd, the largest at the Speedway since the 100th Running in 2016, along with the most lead changes ever recorded in the Indianapolis 500.

CALENDARROAD COURSE

IndyCar Series Heads to Detroit Street Circuit Four Days After Indy 500

The NTT IndyCar Series moves to the Streets of Detroit for the Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit presented by Lear on May 31, four days after the Indianapolis 500. The 10-turn, 1.645-mile street circuit differs sharply from the 2.5-mile Indy oval, with concrete walls lining the course and contact risk high. Last year’s race collected at least eight cars in cautions across five full-course yellows. All three past winners of the Detroit street circuit version — Alex Palou in 2023, Scott Dixon in 2024, and Kyle Kirkwood in 2025 — return to compete. The race airs at 12:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

McLaughlin and Armstrong Produce Late Heroics in Indy 500 Photo Finish

Scott McLaughlin and Marcus Armstrong produced strong performances in the closing laps of the Indianapolis 500. McLaughlin charged from 10th on the Lap 196 restart to third by the final-lap restart and held that position in a photo finish with Armstrong and Pato O’Ward. For McLaughlin, it was his second top-six finish in the last three races and returned him to the Power Rankings after a 16th-place result in the Sonsio Grand Prix. Armstrong, driving for Meyer Shank Racing, finished fifth having led the final restart before David Malukas surged past. Armstrong now owns six top-11 finishes in seven starts this season.

Kirkwood’s Season-Worst Indy 500 Finish Reshuffles Championship Top Three

Kyle Kirkwood endured a season-worst 16th-place finish at the Indianapolis 500, dropping him to third in the championship standings, 49 points behind leader Alex Palou. The result surpassed his previous season low of ninth place in the Sonsio Grand Prix. Kirkwood has not led a lap since his March 15 victory in the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington, where he paced the final 16 laps. With David Malukas now second in points following two consecutive runner-up finishes at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the championship order entering the Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit has been significantly reshaped with 11 races remaining in the season.

O’Ward Delivers Sixth Top-Six Indy 500 Finish Despite Racing in Backup Car

Pato O’Ward finished fourth in the Indianapolis 500 despite racing in a backup car after a practice crash on May 18 — the second setback of an eventful May for the Arrow McLaren driver. An opening-lap incident in the Sonsio Grand Prix caused by contact from Rosenqvist had already dropped O’Ward to 18th in that race. Sunday’s fourth place marked O’Ward’s sixth top-six finish in seven Indianapolis 500 starts. He enters the Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit fifth in the championship standings, 85 points behind Palou, having now appeared in 25 consecutive Power Rankings dating to Portland International Raceway in 2024.
