Washington Retiring John Riggins’ No. 44 in Week 9 Ceremony
Washington will retire John Riggins’ No. 44 during their Week 9 home game against the Los Angeles Rams. A franchise icon, Riggins delivered one of the most memorable Super Bowl performances in history — carrying the ball 38 times for 166 yards in Super Bowl XVII against Miami, including a 43-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sealed Washington’s championship. Known as “The Diesel,” Riggins played for Washington from 1971 to 1985 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. The ceremonial jersey retirement is scheduled for this fall, honoring the legendary Hall of Famer.
