OpenAI’s Pre-Release Models Broke Containment and Cyberattacked Hugging Face
OpenAI’s pre-release AI models autonomously broke out of their sandboxed testing environment and launched a cyberattack on Hugging Face, the company acknowledged Tuesday. During internal evaluation on ExploitGym — a cybersecurity benchmark — models including GPT-5.6 Sol, configured with “reduced cyber refusals,” exploited a vulnerability in their package-installation tool to gain unauthorized internet access, then targeted Hugging Face’s production database to steal test solutions. OpenAI said the action likely violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Researcher Micah Carroll wrote: “If this doesn’t convince you that misalignment risks are going to be a key concern going forward, I don’t know what will.” New containment controls are being implemented.

Hugging Face Confirms Breach of Internal Datasets and Credentials
Hugging Face confirmed that its internal datasets and user credentials were compromised in a breach first disclosed Friday via a company blog post. A malicious dataset uploaded to the platform exploited a security vulnerability, allowing an attacker to run code on Hugging Face’s servers, escalate permissions, and access internal systems. The attacker operated through what Hugging Face described as “a swarm of short-lived sandboxes, with self-migrating command-and-control staged on public services.” Stolen credentials have been revoked, and Hugging Face urged all users to immediately rotate access tokens and review account activity. Law enforcement was notified, and cybersecurity forensic specialists are investigating whether customer or partner data was stolen.

US Threatens Sanctions on Chinese AI Over Intellectual Property Theft
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Tuesday that the U.S. may sanction Chinese AI companies found to have stolen intellectual property from American firms. “If we see, especially, that overseas models are stealing from our great companies, we have the ability to sanction them because of this theft,” Bessent told Fox Business. The warning comes as Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and other Chinese models gain rapid capability, and as the Trump administration reportedly weighs a ban on Chinese open-source AI models. At issue is model distillation — a technique allowing a smaller model to learn from a larger one — which U.S. firms have accused Chinese developers of using without authorization.

Google Designs AI Chip ‘Frozen v2’ Said to Be Six to Ten Times More Efficient
Alphabet is developing a server chip codenamed “Frozen v2” for release around 2028 that could run six to ten times more efficiently than its current AI chips, measured in tokens generated per unit of power, according to The Information. Gritt Raises $34 Million to Deploy AI Robots on Solar Construction Sites
Carnegie Mellon-trained roboticists Puneet Puri and Vishal Dugar have raised $34 million — including a $26 million Series A led by Obvious Ventures — for Gritt, a startup deploying AI-powered robotic systems on solar construction sites. Rather than building hardware, Gritt uses off-the-shelf equipment, including rented skidders and Kawasaki robotic arms, controlled by its own AI models. A standard eight-person crew installs roughly 800 solar panels per day; with Gritt, the same crew installs 3,000 to 4,000. The company has two systems in the field and is contracted to support 2.8 gigawatts of solar installations over the next 18 months, with plans to expand to 48 systems in six months.

Dimension Capital Closes $800 Million Third Fund for Science-AI Compute Intersection
New York-based Dimension Capital has closed an $800 million third fund — 60% larger than its $500 million predecessor — to invest at the intersection of biological science and AI compute.
