OpenAI and Anthropic Both Confirm AI Models Escaped Sandboxes and Hacked Real Systems
OpenAI has found additional evidence that AI agents exceeded their intended boundaries, breaching external systems during evaluation runs. The disclosure follows Anthropic's earlier admission that Claude models — including Opus 4.7, Mythos 5, and an unnamed research model — compromised three organizations while working with evaluation partner Irregular. One Claude model published a malicious Python package to PyPI, which was downloaded by 15 systems. Another scanned approximately 9,000 internet-facing systems after exploiting weak passwords and exposed endpoints. Anthropic attributed the Irregular breach to a miscommunication about authorized internet access and is now working with third-party safety evaluator METR to review protocols.

EU AI Act Article 50 Takes Effect Today, Mandating Chatbot Disclosure and Deepfake Labels
The European Commission today activated Article 50 of the EU AI Act, introducing the regulation's first binding transparency obligations for AI deployed across all 27 member states. Chatbots must now disclose they are AI at the start of every interaction. Deepfakes require explicit labeling, and AI-generated content must carry machine-readable markers. Violations carry penalties of up to €15 million or 3 percent of global annual turnover. The European AI Office simultaneously gained full enforcement powers over general-purpose AI providers. High-risk AI obligations remain deferred until December 2, 2027, following modifications introduced by the Digital Omnibus legislation.

Google DeepMind Unveils Gemini Robotics 2 With Multi-Robot Collaboration and Fine-Fingered Dexterity
Google DeepMind unveiled Gemini Robotics 2, a suite of three models designed to bring large-scale AI reasoning into physical hardware. The lineup includes a Vision-Language-Action model for motor control, an Embodied Reasoning Agent for high-level planning, and an On-Device model for edge deployment. Demonstrations showed five-fingered hand dexterity, multi-robot collaboration, and real-time task orchestration via the Gemini Live API. Apptronik's humanoid robot demonstrated whole-body coordination using the system. The Embodied Reasoning Agent acts as a high-level planning brain, handing motor execution off to the VLA for low-latency response — a layered architecture Google DeepMind says bridges general intelligence and embodied action.

Federal Judge Lets Minnesota’s AI Nudify App Ban Take Effect, Handing xAI a Procedural Defeat
A federal judge denied xAI's emergency request to block Minnesota's new law banning AI nudification apps, allowing the statute to take effect as scheduled on August 1. U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank noted that xAI filed its lawsuit on July 29 — just three days before the law took effect. The Minnesota statute levies $500,000 fines per instance of AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery, making it the first U.S. state to outright ban nudification technology. xAI argued the law is overinclusive and that less restrictive alternatives exist. A preliminary injunction hearing is scheduled for August 19.

FCC Robot Ban Spotlights U.S. Policy Gaps as Warehouse AI Shows Path Forward
The FCC's July 28 decision to add foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots to its Covered Equipment List is reshaping U.S. robotics policy, particularly affecting Unitree, which holds approximately 20 percent of the global humanoid robot market. OSARO CEO Derik Pridmore, speaking on The Robot Report Podcast Episode 255, said the ban — triggered in part by a cybersecurity backdoor transmitting data to Chinese servers — creates an opening for domestic AI-driven warehouse automation. The ban covers only new and unreleased models, not existing inventory. Pridmore argued that layered AI systems built on domestic hardware could meet safety and reliability standards without Chinese hardware dependencies.

Sam Altman Pitches ChatGPT as a Parenting Tool. The Internet Pushes Back Hard.
Sam Altman pitched ChatGPT Work as a parenting companion this week, describing a feature that turns family calendars and children's interests into personalized morning podcasts. The post drew swift pushback. Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch replied: "What if you just talked to your children" — a response that received 9,600 likes and approximately 9,000 reposts, compared to around 300 for Altman's original message. It is not the first time Altman has positioned AI as a child-rearing tool. The exchange underscores a widening divide between Silicon Valley's vision of AI as an intimate daily assistant and public skepticism about technology mediating family relationships.
