The health sector’s first purpose-built cyber resilience exercise stress-tested organizational responses to a coordinated nation-state attack on cloud identity infrastructure. Organized by Health-ISAC and the HSCCC Cybersecurity Working Group, Operation Vital Signs drew more than 500 participants across two days of simulated crisis scenarios. Day one focused on a cloud identity infrastructure breach; day two examined cascading burnout as participants shifted to manual workarounds under sustained attack conditions. The exercise was authored by Health-ISAC Chief Security Officer Errol Weiss and designed to test both technical defenses and human endurance under multi-day attack pressure.

Health Systems Begin to Embrace the AI-Informed Patient

Proactive Tele-ICU Models Reshape Critical Care, Cut Ventilator Days by 44%
Proactive tele-ICU programs are producing measurable gains in critical care quality, according to data described by Dr. Sergio Zanotti of Sound Physicians and Memorial Hermann Houston. At a 200-bed hospital using a proactive tele-ICU model, the first year of deployment yielded a 44% decrease in ventilator days and a 10% increase in case mix index. A 580-bed trauma center reported its Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade improving from D to B after implementing a similar program. The results illustrate a growing shift from reactive tele-ICU monitoring toward round-the-clock proactive clinical engagement with bedside teams across facilities of varying sizes.

The Cost of Four Health System Epic Projects, From $40M to $175M
Four health systems have disclosed the price tags on recent Epic projects, with investments ranging from $40 million to $175 million. Minneapolis-based Children’s Minnesota is running a $175 million, 15-month replacement of two legacy EHR systems. Miami-based Nicklaus Children’s Health System is investing $75 million in a big-bang conversion from Oracle Health to Epic, affecting more than 5,000 physicians, nurses, and staff. Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health is spending $40 million to rebuild Epic after 14 years of customization. Laurel, Miss.-based South Central Regional Medical Center has committed $115 million over 10 years to build a shared digital infrastructure for Mississippi community hospitals.

Survey: 40% of Providers Skip Transparency in Coverage Data in Payer Contract Negotiations
An HFMA and Trek Health survey of 161 healthcare finance and managed care executives reveals that 40% of providers are not using Transparency in Coverage data when negotiating payer contracts. The report identifies payer policy changes not reflected in contracts as the greatest risk of revenue leakage for nearly 70% of respondents. Trek Health CEO Dilpreet Sahota is quoted in the study. The data points to a persistent gap between regulatory requirements for price transparency and actual provider adoption, leaving many health systems without a key data source when setting or reviewing payer terms.

Cleveland Clinic Taps Zipline for Drone Delivery of Medications to Patient Homes
Cleveland Clinic has partnered with drone delivery company Zipline to dispatch medications and health products to patients’ homes within a five-mile radius of its Beachwood Administrative Campus in Ohio. The delivery system uses drones that hover at 300 feet above delivery locations, lowering a sealed pod to the ground on a tether. Controlled substances are excluded from the program. Cleveland Clinic Chief Pharmacy Officer Lindsey Amerine and Zipline President Hillary Brendzel each commented on the partnership. The arrangement gives Cleveland Clinic patients direct-to-home delivery of pharmacy products without requiring a trip to a physical pharmacy.

Where Departing Health System CIOs Are Heading in 2026
A review of roughly 20 health system CIO departures so far in 2026 shows that most exiting executives are not moving into another traditional CIO role. Becker’s tracked four specific exits: Saad Chaudhry left SSM Health to become CEO of consulting firm Evergreen Healthcare Partners; Shakeeb Akhter moved from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as chief digital officer; Rich Rogers retired from Prisma Health after more than 13 years; and Michael Mover resigned from Riverview Health. Nine of the tracked executives moved into digital-titled roles. A 2024 WittKieffer survey found just 39% of healthcare organizations have a CIO succession plan.
