US Tech Job Market Holds Near Pre-Pandemic Baseline With Hiring Still Subdued
Indeed Hiring Lab's August 2026 US labor market snapshot found overall job postings holding near pre-pandemic levels, with the Job Postings Index at 101.8% of the baseline as of mid-August. The report describes a persistent low-hire, low-fire environment: the monthly hiring rate stands at 3.4%, the quits rate at 2%, and the layoffs rate at 1.1%, all subdued. Unemployment fell to 4.1% in July, its lowest level in a year, though Indeed noted the decline was partly driven by workers leaving the labor force. Posted wage growth has slowed relative to consumer price inflation, the report also noted.

2026 Tech Layoffs Reach 176,800 Workers Globally as August Cuts Continue
TrueUp's live layoffs tracker recorded 555 tech company layoff events in 2026 through late August, with 176,800 workers impacted globally at a rate of roughly 749 per day. Oracle accounts for the single largest contribution at roughly 30,000 positions, followed by Meta's 8,000 cuts in May and Microsoft's 4,800 in April. AI adoption and geopolitical uncertainty have been widely cited by companies as drivers. InformationWeek's running 2026 tech layoffs tracker confirms cuts have remained consistently elevated, with AI-first workforce restructurings accelerating across companies of all sizes. By comparison, 2025 recorded 783 layoff events total, impacting 245,953 workers.

Tech Worker Wage Growth Falls Behind Inflation as Labor Market Leverage Shrinks
Indeed Hiring Lab's August 2026 labor snapshot identified a significant shift in compensation dynamics: posted wages have been growing more slowly than consumer prices for the past year, eroding real purchasing power for most tech workers. The low-hire, low-fire labor environment has reduced workers' leverage to negotiate raises. Levels.fyi's continuously updated compensation database shows the national median software engineer total compensation at $195,000, with San Francisco Bay Area engineers averaging $282,040. Big Tech packages remain the highest, with median annual compensation of $299,000 at Google, $267,000 at Amazon, and $227,000 at Microsoft, all self-reported and verified by Levels.fyi against offer letters.
