Sabres Rally Past Rangers to Seize Atlantic Division Lead
The Buffalo Sabres stormed back from a two-goal deficit with three third-period goals to defeat the New York Rangers 5–3 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, vaulting into sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division. Michael McLeod opened the scoring, but Alexis Lafrenière (twice) and Adam Fox answered for New York. Tuch, Jason Zucker, and Zach Benson — with an empty-netter at 18:44 — turned the tide in the final frame. Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 17 shots, while Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves for the Rangers. Buffalo now sits at 104 points, two ahead of both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Montreal Canadiens with roughly a week left in the regular season.
McDavid Erupts for Hat Trick and Five Points as Oilers Top Sharks
Connor McDavid was simply unstoppable Wednesday night at SAP Center, registering a hat trick and two assists to account for all five goals in Edmonton’s 5–2 win over San Jose. McDavid opened the scoring with a power-play marker at 6:18 of the first, then added two more to complete his hat trick — his second of the season. Jack Roslovic and Vasily Podkolzin each chipped in a goal and an assist, while Evan Bouchard contributed two helpers from the blue line. The victory snapped Edmonton’s two-game skid and gives the Oilers (40–29–10) their sixth win in eight games as they jostle for playoff seeding in the Western Conference’s final weeks.
Capitals Shut Out Maple Leafs 4–0; Toronto Set to Miss Playoffs for First Time Since 2016
Logan Thompson posted his third shutout of the season with 21 saves as the Washington Capitals blanked the Toronto Maple Leafs 4–0 on Wednesday, breathing life into Washington’s fading playoff hopes. Dylan Strome and Martin Fehervary each scored and added an assist, while Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson rounded out the scoring. Anthony Stolarz suffered a lower-body injury early in the first period for Toronto, forcing Joseph Woll into action. The Capitals now sit three points back of the Eastern Conference’s final wild-card spot with three games remaining. Meanwhile, Toronto looks increasingly certain to miss the postseason for the first time since 2016, ending a decade-long streak of playoff appearances.
Chabot Makes Remarkable Return to Senators Lineup Just 17 Days After Breaking Arm
Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot made a stunning comeback Thursday, suiting up against the Florida Panthers just 17 days after breaking his right forearm in a March 23 game against the New York Rangers. Chabot underwent surgery on March 26 — a procedure that inserted two metal plates and screws — and was initially expected to miss one to two months. His rapid recovery has stunned Ottawa’s medical staff and the hockey world alike. Chabot played regular minutes against Florida, providing an immediate boost to the Senators’ blue line as Ottawa fights to hold onto a playoff wild-card spot with just four games remaining in the regular season.

The NHL injury front saw notable updates Thursday. Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Stuart Skinner — acquired from Edmonton in December — returned to the crease against the New Jersey Devils after missing one game with an eye injury sustained on the bench during Pittsburgh’s 9–4 rout of Florida on April 4. He was cleared in time for Thursday’s contest and resumed his starting duties. In Nashville, forward Nazem Kadri — picked up from Calgary on March 6 — was ruled out against the Flames with a finger injury. Kadri had been a key addition for the Predators’ stretch run, and his absence could complicate Nashville’s already tenuous grip on a Western Conference wild-card spot.
McKenna Remains Clear-Cut No. 1 Pick as Central Scouting Final Rankings Loom
With the 2026 NHL Draft set for Buffalo on June 26–27, Gavin McKenna continues to dominate prospect rankings by a wide margin. NHL Central Scouting director Dan Marr called McKenna’s combination of hockey sense, quickness, and maturity “a category of his own,” while scout Tim Campbell noted he leads North American skaters “by a considerable margin.” The Penn State winger posted 51 points (15G, 36A) in 35 games this season — tied for fourth in the NCAA and second in points-per-game at 1.46. Central Scouting’s final rankings are slated for release April 16. Swedish Hockey League standout Ivar Stenberg of Frölunda holds the No. 2 position, followed by Chase Reid and Keaton Verhoeff in the tier behind.
