The Carolina Hurricanes dominated the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final at Bell Centre on Wednesday, taking a commanding 3-1 series lead with one win needed to reach the Stanley Cup Final. Andrei Svechnikov added an empty-net goal late in the third. Frederik Andersen made 18 saves for his third postseason shutout, while Jakub Dobes stopped 39 shots for Montreal. Golden Knights Sweep Avalanche, Return to Stanley Cup Final for Third Time

The Vegas Golden Knights are heading to the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in nine franchise seasons after completing a stunning sweep of the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche. Mark Stone and Cole Smith scored, and Carter Hart made 20 saves in a 2-1 Game 4 victory Monday in Las Vegas. The Avalanche, despite holding the edge in shots, shot attempts, and scoring chances in 5-on-5 play throughout the series, could not overcome Vegas’s defensive structure and goaltending. Colorado is the fifth Presidents’ Trophy winner in NHL history to be swept in a postseason series. The Golden Knights finished the Western Conference playoffs with a 12-4 record.

Hired with Eight Games Left, Tortorella Returns to Cup Final After 22 Years

John Tortorella is set to become one of the most improbable coaching stories in Stanley Cup Final history. Hired on March 29 to replace fired head coach Bruce Cassidy with only eight games remaining in the regular season, Tortorella guided the Golden Knights to a 7-0-1 finish, then led them on a dominant 12-4 playoff run through the Western Conference. He has not appeared in a Stanley Cup Final since lifting the Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 — a span of 22 years. Tortorella is the third coach in NHL history to reach the Final after taking over in the final 10 games of a regular season.

INJURY

MacKinnon and Makar Both Played Hurt as Avalanche Were Swept from Playoffs

The Colorado Avalanche faced the Vegas Golden Knights at less than full strength throughout the Western Conference Final, a fact that contributed to their four-game sweep. Defenseman Cale Makar, a Norris Trophy finalist, missed the first two games of the series after sustaining an upper-body injury in the second round, and played through pain in Games 3 and 4 without recording a point. Nathan MacKinnon was injured in Game 3 when a shot from Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore struck his right knee. Both played in Game 4 despite their limitations. Makar had five goals and one assist in his first nine playoff games before the injury derailed his postseason.

Stankoven Sets Youngest All-Time Record with Historic Playoff Goal Streak

Logan Stankoven has emerged as one of the most dangerous scorers in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, posting a team-leading eight goals in 12 postseason games for the Carolina Hurricanes. The 23-year-old scored in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final against Montreal, breaking down the right side on a 2-on-1 with Jackson Blake and shooting over Jakub Dobes’s outstretched pad. Stankoven made history earlier in the postseason by becoming the youngest player ever to open a playoff year with a five-game goal streak, surpassing Alexander Mogilny’s record set in 1993. His line with Taylor Hall and Jackson Blake has been one of the most productive units in the playoffs.

Vegas Awaits Cup Final Opponent as Hurricanes Seek to Close Out Canadiens Friday

The Vegas Golden Knights await their Stanley Cup Final opponent after sweeping the Colorado Avalanche, and both potential foes present distinct challenges. The Carolina Hurricanes, who lead Montreal 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Final, finished the regular season as the top team in the Eastern Conference with 113 points and a 53-22-7 record. The Golden Knights split a pair of regular-season games against Carolina, winning 4-1 at home and losing 6-3 in Raleigh. Should Carolina advance, a Game 5 win on Friday would set up a first-ever Stanley Cup Final meeting between the two franchises. Vegas carries +120 odds to win the Cup.
