Canada Rolls to Perfect Pool-Play Record at 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup
Canada opened the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup with a perfect preliminary-round record, defeating Switzerland 7-3 and Slovakia 6-1 before completing the sweep against Sweden on Wednesday evening in Red Deer and Edmonton. The results advanced Canada to Friday's semifinals at a tournament the country has won 25 times. Forward Landon DuPont, the only returning player from Canada's 2025 bronze-medal team and a potential first-overall pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, earned player-of-the-game honours against Slovakia with a power-play goal and an assist. WHL forward Kayden Stroeder also scored twice in that contest.

Red Wings Hire Search Firm as Larkin Trade Request Stands
The Detroit Red Wings have hired a search firm to assist in finding Steve Yzerman's replacement as general manager, sources told TSN, with ownership targeting an analytics-focused successor. Shawn Horcoff is handling day-to-day operations on an interim basis but will not have authority to make trades. Separately, captain Dylan Larkin has not wavered in his trade request made after the regular season. The 30-year-old three-time All-Star — carrying an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31 — has indicated preferred destinations including Dallas, Vegas, Minnesota and Florida. Detroit finished 41-31-10, missing the playoffs for the 10th consecutive year.
Ovechkin Returns for 22nd Season Chasing Another Cup
Alex Ovechkin announced he will return to Washington for a 22nd NHL season on a one-year, $4.25 million contract, motivated by an opportunity to win another Stanley Cup. The 40-year-old — who turns 41 in September — posted 64 points (32 goals, 32 assists) in 82 games last season while scoring his 929th career goal to remain the all-time leader. Blueger Signs Two-Year Deal as Maple Leafs Begin New Era
Centre Teddy Blueger signed a two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1 as the club begins a new era under general manager Patrik Chayka, hired May 3, and head coach Scott Hiller, hired June 17. Blueger, who turns 32 on August 15, called the situation "a clean slate." Toronto has been active this offseason, signing goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract, acquiring Taylor Raddysh from Tampa Bay via sign-and-trade, and selecting centre Logan McKenna first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Leafs finished eighth in the Atlantic Division last season.
DuPont and Stroeder Emerge as Canada's Headliners at Hlinka Gretzky Cup
Two players are standing out for Canada at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup: Landon DuPont and Kayden Stroeder. DuPont, committed to the Michigan Wolverines next season, is the only returnee from last year's bronze-medal team. TSN analyst Cameron Gaunce called him "far and away the best player on the ice today" after his player-of-the-game performance against Slovakia. Stroeder, who recorded 32 points in 55 WHL games with the Edmonton Oil Kings in his rookie season, earned Gaunce's praise as the type of "third-line centre other nations don't have at first line."
