How Gold Plastic Syndrome Is Killing Toys and Game Consoles

Hackaday recently covered the phenomenon known as Gold Plastic Syndrome (GPS), a material failure affecting toy and game console enclosures made with certain ABS plastic formulations. Originally identified in the Transformers collector community, GPS occurs when metallic shimmer additives interact with the ABS base material, causing the plastic to become brittle and disintegrate. Nintendo DS consoles with metallic-coated shells are among the devices affected, with the condition manifesting as yellowing, extreme brittleness, and shattered hinges — often discovered the moment a repair technician attempts disassembly. Replacing affected shells with third-party alternatives remains a viable solution for restoring broken DS units.

PS4 Optical Pickup Becomes a Nanometer-Resolution Skin Imager

At Hackaday Europe 2026, researcher Edwin Hwu presented a hardware repurposing project: turning a PlayStation 4 optical pickup into a dermal atomic force microscope capable of imaging skin at nanometer resolution. Hwu previously built an atomic force microscope from a DVD player optical head, achieving a 0.39 nanometer resolution. The PS4 Blu-Ray optical head proved an ideal donor for a high-quality AFM build. By combining the hardware with machine learning, Hwu demonstrated that skin nanotexture data can identify whether a person has asthma with 75% accuracy. The project also explores potential connections between psychological stress and measurable skin nanotexture characteristics.

Crowdsourced Coil Whine Database Opens for Submissions

A maker known as Lowell has launched the Coil Whine Database, a crowdsourced resource tracking electromagnetic noise from PC components. The project aims to map which specific hardware components produce coil whine and how severe it is, noting that noise levels vary across individual units of the same model. To reduce survivor bias, reports of silent parts are weighted higher than complaints — since people satisfied with quiet hardware are less likely to seek out and submit a report. The database will not publicly display results for any device until at least five reports are received. Submissions and project files are both available on GitHub.

Haiku OS R1 Beta 6 Arrives With Firefox Support and 530+ Fixes

The Haiku Project released R1 Beta 6 on August 26, 2026, marking more than two years since the previous beta and arriving about one week after the project's 25th anniversary. Headline features include support for running Mozilla Firefox and derivative browsers, QEMU hardware virtualization via the NetBSD Virtual Machine Monitor (NVMM), and improved POSIX and hardware compatibility. A unified bootcd and livecd image simplifies installation, and over 530 bugs and enhancement tickets have been resolved in this release. The Haiku OS is a free, open-source operating system inspired by BeOS. 64-bit ARM architecture support is not included in this release.

CNC-Driven Flip Disc Display Accepts Browser-Queued Images

Adafruit covered a striking electromechanical display project called PAR, built around a 37-by-18 array of square flip discs, each showing either a black or blue face. Rather than traditional electromagnetic actuators, PAR uses a CNC machine that physically scans across the array, pushing each disc one at a time with a physical pin. A color sensor on the head reads which side of a disc is currently showing before actuation, and a LIDAR sensor measures push distance. PAR accepts drawings and uploaded images through a browser-based interface, allowing anyone to queue content for display. Project files are available for review.

Agent Fingers Turns a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 Into an AI-Controlled Debug Tool

MRBElectronics published Agent Fingers, a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 (RP2350)-based digital IO tool designed to help AI agents and developers automate and debug embedded systems with no custom hardware required. Controlled over USB, it exposes a bidirectional GPIO bank, PWM output on any channel up to 100 kHz, a UART port with configurable baud rate and format, I2C operating as both master and slave, and SPI running on PIO to allow all peripherals to run concurrently. For safety, digital and PWM outputs require an explicit arm request with a time-limited lease that auto-expires, and the MCP layer denies all write-capable tools by default.

SSH Serial Bridge Puts UART and USB Serial Access Over Wi-Fi

Hiroshi Nakajima's SSH Serial Bridge project addresses a common frustration for embedded developers: accessing serial consoles on remote devices has traditionally required physical cables and dedicated network infrastructure. The SSH Serial Bridge uses an ESP32-S3 microcontroller to bridge an SSH connection directly to a UART or USB CDC serial port over Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for a dedicated gateway PC, rack hardware, LAN cabling, or extra drivers. The network side supports WPS, so connecting to a wireless access point requires only a button press rather than manual password entry. A browser-based terminal interface and GPIO control are also included.

Edge AI Pull-Up Counter Runs YOLO Pose on the RK3576 Without Cloud

Maker Myang built a real-time pull-up counter combining an RK3576-powered board with YOLO Pose for body pose estimation. The project runs entirely at the edge, detecting and counting pull-up repetitions without any cloud connection, then streaming annotated video results to a web browser over the local network. The RK3576 system-on-chip handles the real-time YOLO Pose detection locally on the board. The system demonstrates how edge hardware can replace cloud-dependent fitness applications, tracking repetitions from a camera feed and giving makers a local, private AI-powered workout counter without needing external services or subscriptions.
