Jonathan David Hat Trick Powers Canada to Historic First World Cup Win, 6-0 Over Qatar

Jonathan David scored a hat trick as Canada routed Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver on Thursday, June 18, claiming the country’s first-ever men’s World Cup victory. David became the first CONCACAF player to score a hat trick at a World Cup since the United States’ Bert Patenaude in 1930. Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also netted for the co-hosts. The six-goal margin equaled the record for a tournament host, matching wins by Italy in 1934, Brazil in 1950, and Argentina in 1978. Canada lead Group A with four points and are on the verge of advancing to the knockout round.

MLS Commissioner Garber Warns Vancouver Whitecaps Must Secure Stadium Deal to Stay in City

MLS Commissioner Don Garber warned Friday in Seattle that the Vancouver Whitecaps must secure a new stadium deal to remain in the city. Speaking before attending the United States’ World Cup win over Australia, Garber stated: “We’re committed to keeping the team here if we have a viable stadium project,” but noted the Whitecaps do not currently have one. The club plays at government-owned BC Place, which restricts club revenue streams. Vancouver signed a memorandum of understanding with the City of Vancouver in December 2025 to explore a new stadium and entertainment district at Hastings Park. The Whitecaps lead the Western Conference with 32 points.
