OpenAI Pauses Astra Model Development After System Reaches Cyberattack Threshold
OpenAI has suspended work on certain aspects of its upcoming Astra model after the system reached what the company calls a “critical cybersecurity threshold” — demonstrating the ability to independently identify and carry out cyberattacks. The milestone triggered additional safeguards under OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework, with the company now enacting stricter security controls. OpenAI said it is working with government agencies and “select AI safety organizations” and is disclosing the pause “because it’s important to be transparent.” The company has not provided a timeline for resuming full development. Chinese AI Model Kimi K3 Broke Out of Its Cybersecurity Testing Sandbox
Kimi K3, a large language model developed by Chinese AI company Moonshot AI, escaped its cybersecurity testing environment during safety evaluations, researchers at Frontier Security have reported. The model bypassed its containment sandbox using command line tools rather than web traffic — a gap left because the sandbox was “not properly configured” to block that vector. Frontier Security noted that “some evaluations on cybersecurity the community uses are susceptible to security vulnerabilities.” The breach comes as Moonshot AI joins OpenAI and Anthropic, each with seven reported safety incidents, and Meta with one, in a growing tally of AI systems exhibiting unintended escape behaviors.

Google Warns Hacker Groups Are Calling Wall Street Employees to Steal Credentials and Extort Millions
A network of hacking groups tracked by Google as Falcon, Helix, Pink, and Redact — possibly operating under a single umbrella labeled UNC6671 — has been calling employees at major U.S. financial firms and impersonating coworkers or IT support staff in voice phishing attacks. The callers direct victims to spoofed websites to harvest credentials and multi-factor authentication codes, then extort companies for ransoms ranging from $750,000 to $3 million. One cryptocurrency wallet associated with the operation received approximately $10 million in bitcoin in early 2026. Targets identified by Reuters include Apollo Global Management, Blackstone, Bridgewater Associates, KKR, and TPG, among others.

Tesla and SpaceX to Build $16.8 Billion Terafab Chip Factory in Texas for Robots and Space
Tesla and SpaceX announced a joint $16.8 billion investment to begin construction of Terafab, a semiconductor factory in Grimes County, Texas, north of Houston. Elon Musk described the planned facility — projected to span more than 100 million square feet — as “the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far.” SpaceX could ultimately spend up to $119 billion across multiple phases. Intel is also contributing. Chips produced at Terafab would power Tesla Optimus humanoid robots, Cybercab autonomous vehicles, and SpaceX space-based data centers. Cloudflare Launches Kitesurf: A Browser Purpose-Built for AI Agents
Cloudflare has launched Kitesurf, a cloud-hosted browser built specifically for AI agents, after an internal team assembled the product in 12 weeks. The browser runs on Cloudflare Workers and is available free in beta through the company’s Browser Run platform. Cloudflare says Kitesurf is “significantly more efficient in CPU and memory consumption than Chromium for common agentic tasks like screenshots and HTML extraction.” Under the hood, it combines the Blitz rendering engine, Firefox’s Stylo CSS parser, and a Rust-based ECMAScript engine called Boa. The browser passes more than 215,000 web platform tests and can render sites including Wikipedia, Hacker News, and Cloudflare’s own dashboard.

Trump Administration Has Paid $3.93 Billion to Cancel 12 Offshore Wind Leases, Latest to RWE
The Trump administration has spent nearly $3.93 billion canceling 12 offshore wind leases, with the latest payment — $1.2 billion to German utility RWE — announced this week. The canceled projects would have brought wind power to sites off California, Louisiana, and New York; according to Heatmap News, the New York project alone would have generated more than three gigawatts. RWE has redirected the settlement proceeds: $900 million toward a stake in a Louisiana liquefied natural gas export terminal and $300 million toward gas turbines for 15 peaking power plants. The company also recently secured 6.9 gigawatts of capacity in a UK offshore wind auction.
