Nvidia Closes In on $12.9 Billion Hugging Face Acquisition
Nvidia has reportedly agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI model hub, for $12.9 billion, according to The Information. The deal, not yet finalized per Business Insider, would give Nvidia a dominant position in the open-source AI ecosystem at a moment when closed-source labs including Google, Amazon, and Anthropic are building their own chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia hardware. Hugging Face, which generates roughly $150 million in annual revenue, had previously rejected a $500 million investment offer from Nvidia that would have valued the company at $7 billion. The company was last valued at $4.5 billion in its 2023 funding round.

Apple Debuts 2nm M6 Chip and M5 Ultra for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Apple unveiled two new processors on August 25: the M5 Ultra and M6, powering updated Mac Mini and Mac Studio systems. EU AI Act Transparency Rules Enter Force, Requiring Chatbot and Deepfake Disclosures
The European Commission began enforcing the EU AI Act’s transparency provisions on August 2, 2026, requiring chatbots and interactive AI systems to disclose to users that they are interacting with AI rather than a human. AI-generated deepfakes — images, video, or audio altered or produced by AI — must now be labeled as such. The enforcement covers providers of general-purpose AI systems serving users in the EU. High-risk AI compliance obligations were pushed back: standalone Annex III systems now face a December 2027 deadline, and high-risk AI embedded in regulated products faces an August 2028 deadline, following adoption of the Digital Omnibus simplification package in June.
California AI Transparency Act Takes Effect, Targeting Generative AI with 1M+ Users
California’s AI Transparency Act, Senate Bill 942 as amended by Assembly Bill 853, took effect August 2, 2026, applying to developers of publicly accessible generative AI systems with more than one million monthly visitors or users in California. Covered providers must disclose when content has been generated by AI and offer users a way to detect AI-generated material. The law represents one of the first state-level transparency mandates for generative AI in the United States and runs parallel to the EU AI Act’s August 2 enforcement date, which imposes similar disclosure requirements on AI systems serving European users.
