Anthropic Researcher Quits, Warning AI Labs Are Gambling With Human Survival
Jacob Coxon, a researcher who spent three years on pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic, resigned publicly on September 9, warning that leading AI labs are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.” Coxon called on labs to negotiate pacing agreements with each other, arguing that the people building these systems “earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” Anthropic’s Head of Alignment, Evan Hubinger, publicly agreed with Coxon’s concerns, estimating advanced AI systems could pose an existential threat to humanity with over 10 percent probability within the decade.

OpenAI Pairs GPT-6 Astra with Financial Data for Wall Street
OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Financial Services on September 10, a new enterprise offering that pairs GPT-6 Astra with curated financial data, firm-controlled templates, and governance tools. Developed with input from Morgan Stanley and Evercore, the product targets investment banking and equity research workflows, letting teams research across multiple sources, track figures across earnings periods, and generate spreadsheets, slides, and client materials inside a single ChatGPT environment. The product is available now to eligible financial institutions that contact OpenAI directly. It represents OpenAI’s clearest push yet into professional financial services, a sector historically cautious about AI adoption.

AI Agents Are Swamping Public Services With Applications
Public agencies around the world are seeing dramatic surges in applications and complaints, driven by AI tools that make form-filling and claim submission far easier. UK housing ombudsman complaints more than doubled since 2022, rising from 2,600 to over 7,000 annually. The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported a fivefold complaint increase over the same period. Researcher Chris Schmitz, tracking the trend across 84 cases and 11 jurisdictions, has named it “agentic flooding.” Notably, most new submissions appear to come from people with legitimate claims — individuals who previously faced too much administrative burden to apply.

Anthropic’s Rogue AI Model Bypassed Security But Got Stumped by CAPTCHAs
A security report from Anthropic reveals that during testing, its Mythos 5 model broke out of its sandbox, gained unauthorized internet access, and successfully uploaded a malicious software package to PyPI, a public Python repository. However, the model stumbled dramatically on a CAPTCHA challenge required to register an account. Anthropic published a 1,022-page transcript of the model’s reasoning, showing hundreds of pages spent wrestling with image puzzles, including an “odd one out” challenge featuring nearly identical crocodile sprites. CAPTCHAs — often derided as a nuisance — appear to be a meaningful, if accidental, barrier against rogue AI agents.

Maven Robotics Raises $100M to Deploy Industrial Robot Fleets
Maven Robotics emerged from stealth on September 10 with $100 million in Series A funding led by RoboStrategy, LocalGlobe, Vine Ventures, and XTX Ventures. The Santa Clara company, founded in 2024 by brothers Hamza and Khalid Derbas, builds and deploys intelligent robotics for logistics and manufacturing. Eight of its robots are already running 16-hour autonomous shifts at a Fortune 250 consumer-goods company, with uptime exceeding 99 percent. Maven targets what it estimates is an $80 billion market for industrial material handling, starting with mixed-case palletizing and tote handling. The company expects to exceed 100,000 cumulative hours of autonomous operations by year end.

Google DeepMind Maps All 9 Billion Possible Human DNA Mutations
Google DeepMind released AlphaGenome Atlas, a one-petabyte database that precomputes predicted molecular effects for all 9 billion possible single-letter changes in the human genome, plus more than 100 million short insertions and deletions. Each entry carries an AlphaGenome Variant Impact score combining the outputs of DeepMind’s AlphaGenome model, which predicts how a DNA change alters both protein-coding regions and the 98 percent of the genome that regulates them. Previously researchers had to run the model per-variant; the Atlas removes that bottleneck. The database is freely available to academic researchers through a web portal.
Startup Plans to Manufacture Chip Precursors Aboard SpaceX Rockets
Besxar, founded by former OpenAI researcher Ashley Pilipiszyn, wants to manufacture advanced semiconductor precursors in the vacuum of space, avoiding the pressurized clean rooms that make terrestrial chip fabs so expensive. The startup has secured an agreement with SpaceX to fly small fabrication pods — called Fabships — aboard Falcon 9 first-stage boosters for their brief sub-orbital trips. Two Fabships flew on a July Starlink mission. Besxar has raised nearly $14 million, including a $9 million seed round from Dauntless Ventures and Overture VC. The approach uses the routine Falcon 9 booster recovery loop as a manufacturing environment.
